の3(because / since / as) Three Words for Because

Conjunctions

3いは「がそのっているか」です。because はらない。since と as は、しているえる。だから Why? へのえになれるのは because だけです。ったら because をんでおけばしません。

The split is about what your listener already knows. Because hands over a reason they don't have yet. Since and as attach a reason you both already accept. That's why only because can answer a direct "Why?" When you're unsure, because is the safe pick.

New Reason or Shared Reason

because を使うと、ります。らないしているからです。since と as はで、きにげして、たせます。だから since と as はかれることがく、because はろにかれることがい。は、このいからてきます。

With because, the weight of the sentence lands on the reason, because that's the part your listener didn't have. Since and as do the opposite: they demote the reason to background and let the second half take the spotlight. That's why since and as so often open a sentence while because tends to come after. The position follows from where the weight sits.

Where the weight lands

I stayed home because the なぜ the なのか 【そのつにまる】 のいるで、どれをすかつにまるから the。日本語なら「(の)」「うちの」をってむとい。 trains had この のあるにして、それよりきたことをさかのぼるときに使う。 stopped.

まっていたので、にいた。

の because にある。 The reason is news, and the weight sits on the because clause.

Since the なぜ the なのか 【そのつにまる】 のいるで、どれをすかつにまるから the。日本語なら「(の)」「うちの」をってむとい。 trains had この のあるにして、それよりきたことをさかのぼるときに使う。 stopped, I stayed home.

まっていたことだし、にいた。

まっていたことはっているきとしてく。 The stoppage is taken as shared knowledge, so it sits lightly at the front.

As the なぜ the なのか 【そのつにまる】 のいるで、どれをすかつにまるから the。日本語なら「(の)」「うちの」をってむとい。 deadline had この のあるにして、それよりきたことをさかのぼるときに使う。 passed, we moved on 【move on = む】 この on はの「に」ではなく、move とくっついてらないので、ろにかない。 .

締切ぎていたので、んだ。

as は since とき。言葉く、イギリスでよく使われる。 As works like since. It leans written, and British English uses it more.

because()

Why? へのえ。ろ。でもでも使える。 The direct answer to "Why?" Usually comes second. At home in speech and writing alike.

She left early because her son was sick.

息子くしたので、退した。

since / as(ずみの)

きとしてくのが。as のほうがく、言葉り。 Usually opens the sentence as background. As is the stiffer of the two and leans written.

Since you're already here, could you help me?

せっかくているのだから、ってくれない?

よくある Common Mistake

"Why are you late?" "Since the train was delayed."

「なんでれたの?」「れたので。」(のつもりで)

"Why are you late?" "Because the train was delayed."

「なんでれたの?」「れたんだ。」

Why? とかれたで、はそのりません。since は「お」をえるなので、えにはいません。えとしてなのは because だけです。では Because をいて The train was delayed. とだけうのもで、こちらのほうがむしろかれます。

The moment someone asks "Why?" they are telling you they don't have the reason. Since is for reasons you both already hold, so it can't serve as the answer. Because is the one that fits. In practice, speakers often drop it entirely and just say "The train was delayed," which you'll hear even more often.

  • because of + noun 〜のせいで/〜のおかげで 。because はろにるのでう。 The preposition route to a reason. Because takes a clause, so the socket differs.
  • due to + noun 〜にして because of のい。 A formal because of. Common on notices and announcements.
  • now that ... やもう〜なので わったことをにする。since にく、ろは Points at a changed situation as the reason. Close to since, and a clause follows.
  • That's why ... だから〜なんだ べてから結果 States the reason first, then delivers the result. Very common in speech.
  • The reason is that ... は〜ということです てる。The reason is because はとみなされるので言葉ではける。 Builds the reason as a noun. "The reason is because" reads as doubled, so writing avoids it.
