family・team・staff のような集団の名詞は、アメリカ英語では原則単数扱い(My family is ...)、イギリス英語では「メンバーの集まり」と見るとき複数扱いも標準(My family are ...)。どちらも正しい、地域差の代表例です。ただし police と people(人々)は地域を問わず常に複数扱い。
Group nouns — family, team, staff — take singular verbs in American English (My family is …), while British English also happily uses the plural when picturing the members (My family are …). Both are correct; it's a flagship regional difference. Two exceptions run plural everywhere: police and people.
組織として見るか、顔ぶれとして見るか
The Unit, or the Faces in It?
The team is winning. は、チームをひとつの組織として見た言い方。The team are arguing among themselves. は、メンバー一人ひとりの顔が見える言い方です。アメリカ英語はほぼ常に前者に寄せ、イギリス英語は絵に合わせて使い分けます。学習の基準としては「単数で統一」が安全で、英文を読むときに複数扱いに出会っても驚かない、という構えで十分です。

As your own default, singular is the safe setting — just don't be surprised when British prose goes plural.

よくある間違い / Common Mistake
×The police is looking for the driver.
警察がその運転手を捜している。(のつもりで)
○The police are looking for the driver.
警察がその運転手を捜している。
police は例外中の例外で、米英どちらでも常に複数扱いです。people(人々)も同じく常に複数(なお「民族」の意味では a people / two peoples という別の可算用法があります)。集合名詞の地域差ルールの外にいる固定メンバーとして、この2語は丸暗記してください。1人の警察官なら a police officer です。
Police is the exception's exception: plural in every region, always — and so is people meaning "persons." (People meaning "a nation or ethnic group" is a separate countable word: a people, two peoples.) These two sit outside the regional-choice rule entirely; memorize them as fixed. One individual is a police officer.
the police are ...警察が〜している常時複数の固定枠。単数の場面は a police officer。Fixed plural — the individual is a police officer.
people are ...人々は〜だperson の複数として機能する常時複数。The working plural of person — always plural.
staff membersスタッフ(の個々人)米で個人を数えたいときの言い方。「1人」の意味で a staff とは言わない(集団全体の a staff of ten は別)。How Americans count individuals — no "a staff" for one person (a staff of ten, the whole team, is a different matter).
everyone in my family家族のみんな顔ぶれを言いたいとき、単数の everyone 経由なら地域差を気にせず言える。A region-proof way to reach the faces — via singular everyone.
