Conditionals Without If

Conditionals & Subjunctive

without(〜がなければ)、otherwise(さもなければ)、倒置の Had I known(知っていたら)、命令文+ or(急げ、さもないと)。 見抜くコツは帰結側の would / would have です。

If isn't the only door into the hypothetical. Without (if it weren't for), otherwise (if not), the inverted Had I known, and imperatives with or (hurry, or else) all smuggle conditions in. The tell is always in the result: watch for would and would have.

The Hypothetical Runs Without Its Engine Cover

Without water, nothing could live.(水がなければ、何も生きられないだろう)。

Without water, nothing could live. No if-clause in sight — yet without conjures a waterless world, and could delivers the consequence. Otherwise packs "if what I just said weren't so" into one word. The signature of a hypothetical isn't the word if; it's the would, could, or might waiting in the result.

The usual suspects

Without you, I would have given up long ago.

without =「〜がなければ」の圧縮 if。 Without = a compressed if it weren't for.

I left early. Otherwise, I would have missed the flight.

Otherwise = "had I not done that."

Had I known, I would have come sooner.

Drop the if, invert the had — the polished written form.

If I had known, ...

The everyday version.

If I had known about the sale, I would have waited.

Had I known, ...

The inversion — crisp in writing and formal speech.

Had I known about the sale, I would have waited.

Common Mistake

I took a taxi. Otherwise, I would miss the meeting.

I took a taxi. Otherwise, I would have missed the meeting.

過去の話なら would have done。

What follows otherwise is the result clause of a hidden if — so a past scenario needs would have done. Plain would miss points at the future and breaks the timeline. Hidden or not, the clause keeps the same clock rules.

One word carrying the flipped if of whatever you just said.
  • but for ... But for your help, ...(ご助力なくば…) Without in evening dress: But for your help, …
  • Had it not been for ... 〜がなかったならば(倒置・文語) if it hadn't been for の倒置。 The inversion of if it hadn't been for — for speeches and prose with starch.
The imperative's or, with teeth — often a mock threat.

Summary

  • without・otherwise・倒置・命令文+ or は、みんな隠れ if。 Without, otherwise, inversion, imperative + or — all hidden ifs.
  • 見抜くサインは帰結側の would / would have。 The tell is the would / would have in the result.
Hidden or not, the clock rules don't change.
Had I known is the crisp written inversion.
