英語の名詞は「輪郭のある個体」(可算)と「量ではかる中身」(不可算)に分かれます。判定のコツは輪郭テスト: 1個の絵が描けるなら可算、描けない(物質・情報・抽象)なら不可算。単語ごとの丸暗記より、この見方を先に持つのが近道です。
English sorts nouns into things with outlines (countable) and stuff you measure (uncountable). The quick test: can you draw one of it? If yes, it's countable; if it's material, information, or an abstraction with no edges, it's uncountable. Learn the lens first — the word lists follow.
輪郭テスト
Can You Draw One?
chair は1脚の絵が描けます。だから a chair / two chairs。water は「1個の水」の絵が描けません。だから量ではかります(some water / a glass of water)。日本語は「椅子が2つ」「水が2つ」とどちらも数えられるので、この区別自体が日本語にない感覚。単語を覚えるたびに「輪郭はあるか?」と一度だけ自問する癖をつけると、冠詞も量の言葉も一気に安定します。
You can draw one chair — so it's a chair, two chairs. You can't draw "one water" — so you measure it: some water, a glass of water. Japanese counts both the same way, so the distinction itself is the foreign part. Build the habit of asking "does it have an outline?" once per new word, and your articles and quantity words stabilize together.
個体と中身 Things vs. stuff
We need three chairs for the meeting.
会議用に椅子が3脚要る。
輪郭あり=数える。 Outlined — count them.
We need some furniture for the new office.
新しいオフィスに家具がいくつか要る。
furniture は「家具というカテゴリのかたまり」で輪郭なし。 Furniture is the category as a mass — no outline.
Two coffees and a glass of water, please.
コーヒー2つと水を1杯ください。
不可算も容器・単位を付ければ数えられる(a-with-uncountable 参照)。 Uncountables count fine once you add a unit.
chair(可算)
1個ずつの個体。a が付き、複数形がある。 Individual items — takes a, has a plural.
There's a chair in the corner.
隅に椅子が1脚ある。
furniture(不可算)
カテゴリのかたまり。a なし・複数形なし・量ではかる。 A category-mass — no a, no plural, measured not counted.
This furniture is all secondhand.
この家具はぜんぶ中古なんだ。
よくある間違い Common Mistake
I bought three furnitures yesterday.
昨日、家具を3つ買った。(のつもりで)
I bought three pieces of furniture yesterday.
昨日、家具を3点買った。
furniture は輪郭のないカテゴリ名なので複数形が作れません。個数を言いたいときは a piece of / three pieces of で「1点・3点」と切り分けます。または a table and two chairs のように個体名で言うのが実は一番自然です。
Furniture names an outline-less category, so it has no plural. To count, slice it with pieces — three pieces of furniture — or, most naturally of all, name the actual items: a table and two chairs.
- a piece of ... 1つの〜(万能の切り分け) 輪郭のないものに輪郭を与える汎用単位。advice にも news にも使える。 The universal outline-giver — works on advice, news, almost anything.
- a bit of ... 少しの〜 口語の軽い切り分け。a bit of luck(ちょっとした幸運)。 The casual slice: a bit of luck.
- a sheet of paper 紙1枚 物質の paper は不可算。「1枚」の輪郭は sheet が与える。 Paper the material has no outline — sheet lends it one.
- a cup of / a glass of カップ1杯の/グラス1杯の 液体の定番の輪郭。飲み物の注文はこの型か a coffee 型で。 The standard outlines for liquids — this, or the a coffee shortcut.
