I wish は「現実はそうでない」ことへの願い。だから後ろは仮定法の過去形です(I wish I had more time.)。実現しうる願いは hope(I hope you pass.)。wish と hope の使い分けが、この項のいちばん大事な分かれ道です。
I wish longs for what reality isn't — so it takes the unreal past (I wish I had more time). For wishes that can actually come true, English uses hope (I hope you pass). Telling wish from hope is the fork that matters most here.
wish は「ないものねだり」専用
Wish Is for the Unattainable
wish の後ろは3段構えです。今が違えば → 過去形(I wish I knew.)。あの時が違えば → 過去完了(I wish I hadn't said that.)。相手の行動が変わってくれれば → would(I wish he would stop humming.)。どれも「現実は逆」が前提。仮定法の距離の原理が、願望の形でそのまま働いています。
After wish, three settings: an unreal now takes the past form (I wish I knew); an unreal past takes the past perfect (I wish I hadn't said that); and someone else's stubborn behavior takes would (I wish he would stop humming). All three presuppose that reality says otherwise — the distance principle, wearing a wishful face.

今への願い=過去形。Unreal now — past form.
I wish I hadn'tこの文の組み立て【仮定法過去完了】仮定法過去完了。実際にはそうならなかったことを言う形。過去完了と形はまったく同じだが、意味が違う——時間をさかのぼっているのではなく、事実に反することを述べている。said that.
あんなこと言わなきゃよかった。
過去への悔い=過去完了。Unreal past — past perfect.

鼻歌、やめてくれないかなあ。
相手の(変わりそうにない)行動へは would。軽い苛立ち込み。Someone else's behavior — would, with a dash of exasperation.
hope
実現しうる願い。現在形でそのまま言う。A live hope — plain present tense.
I hope you pass the exam.
試験、受かるといいね。
wish
現実は逆、という前提の願い。過去形の世界。Reality says no — the past-form world.
I wish I could fly.
空を飛べたらなあ。
よくある間違い / Common Mistake
×I wish you will get better soon.
早くよくなりますように。(お見舞いのつもりで)
○I hope you get better soon.

回復は実現してほしい現実の願いなので hope です。wish を使うと「治らないだろうけど」という縁起でもない含みが忍び込みかねません。お見舞い・応援・合格祈願は hope、と決めてしまいましょう。なお I wish you a merry Christmas. のような「wish +人+名詞」の祝辞と、改まった wish to do(= want to の堅い形: I wish to make a complaint. =申し立てをしたいのですが)は別枠で、どちらも現実の願いに使えます。
Recovery is a hope you expect can come true, so hope. Wish would smuggle in a grim "not that you will…" For get-well wishes, cheering, and good luck, default to hope. (Two separate, fully benign patterns: the greeting wish + person + noun — I wish you a merry Christmas — and the formal wish to do, a starched want to: I wish to make a complaint.)
I wish I could.(誘いに)行けたらいいんだけど…「気持ちは本物、現実が無理」を仮定法が一言で運ぶ、上品な断り。The unreal mood compresses "want to, can't" into one graceful no.
I wish you all the best.ご多幸をお祈りします。wish +人+名詞の祝辞枠。仮定法でなく、現実の願いに使える別構文。The greeting frame (wish + person + noun) — a different, fully real-world construction.
If only ...!〜でさえあれば!I wish の感嘆版。後ろの時制ルールは wish と同じ。I wish with an exclamation mark — same tense rules inside.
