myself の使いどころ(再帰代名詞) Myself and Friends: When Actions Bounce Back

代名詞 Pronouns

myself 系の基本は「動作が自分に跳ね返る」とき: I cut myself.(指を切った)。ほかに強調(I made it myself. =自分で作った)と、by myself(一人で)などの慣用。逆に、ただの me の代わりに myself を使うのは規範的には誤りです(Please contact John or me.)。

The core use of myself and family: when the action bounces back onto the doer — I cut myself. Add the emphatic use (I made it myself) and idioms like by myself. What they're not for: replacing a plain me — prescriptively, it's Please contact John or me.

跳ね返りの -self

The Bounce-Back Pronouns

主語と目的語が同一人物のとき、目的語は -self 形になります: She looked at herself in the mirror.(鏡で自分を見た)。もし She looked at her. なら、her は別の女性です。つまり -self は「同じ人だよ」の目印。もうひとつの顔が強調で、The president himself apologized.(大統領みずから謝罪した)のように「本人が直々に」を演出します。

When subject and object are the same person, the object takes the -self form: She looked at herself in the mirror. Say She looked at her, and the her is some other woman — the -self form is the same-person flag. Its second job is emphasis: The president himself apologized — the man in person, no stand-ins.

跳ね返り・強調・慣用 Bounce-back, emphasis, idiom

Be careful — don't hurt yourself.

気をつけて。けがしないでね。

動作が自分に向かう基本用法。 The core bounce-back.

I fixed the bike myself.

自転車は自分で直したんだ。

強調の myself。「誰にも頼まず」の誇らしさ。 Emphatic — with a touch of pride: no help needed.

She lives by herself.

彼女は一人暮らしだ。

by -self =「一人で」。慣用の代表。 By -self = alone. The flagship idiom.

-self(同一人物)

主語に跳ね返る動作。 The action returns to the doer.

He introduced himself to the team.

彼はチームに自己紹介した。

me / him / her(別人)

動作が他人に向かうなら、ふつうの目的格。 Aimed at someone else — plain object pronouns.

He introduced me to the team.

彼は私をチームに紹介してくれた。

よくある間違い Common Mistake

Please send the file to John or myself.

ファイルはジョンか私に送ってください。(丁寧なつもりで)

Please send the file to John or me.

ファイルはジョンか私に送ってください。

me で足りる場所に myself を置くのは、規範文法では誤りです(跳ね返る動作ではないので)。丁寧に聞こえる気がして使われがちで、実はネイティブのビジネスメールにも蔓延していますが、注意深い書き手は避けます。迷ったら「主語と同じ人か?」で判定を。

Where a plain me works, myself is prescriptively wrong — nothing is bouncing back. It gets used because it feels polite, and native business email is riddled with it, but careful writers steer clear. The test: is it the same person as the subject?

  • by myself 一人で 「そばに誰もいない」の慣用。on my own も同義。 No one alongside — on my own says the same.
  • Help yourself. ご自由にどうぞ。 「自分に給仕して」=取り放題の合図。食卓の定番。 "Serve yourself" — the table's open-access signal.
  • Make yourself at home. くつろいでね。 客を迎える決まり文句。動作を相手に返して自由を渡す。 The welcome line — freedom, handed over by grammar.
  • Enjoy yourself! 楽しんできてね! enjoy はふつう目的語を取るので、「楽しんで」は yourself で受ける(単独の Enjoy! もくだけた口語では定着)。 Enjoy normally wants an object — hence yourself. (Bare Enjoy! is well established in casual speech.)

まとめ Summary
