は what) Wh- Questions, and the What/How Trap

Questions

Where do you live? / What did she say?。 で、しくは What do you think? です。how はねるなので、How do you think?

A wh- word goes at the front, and behind it the sentence flips just as any question would: "Where do you live?" "What did she say?" The common trap is asking for an opinion. English says "What do you think?" How asks about method, so "How do you think?" turns into a question about your thought process.

Wh- Word First, Then Flip

You live where. から Where do you live?

Building one takes two steps. First, replace the unknown part with a wh- word and move it to the front. Then flip what's left, exactly as you would in any question. "You live where" becomes "Where do you live?" Adding a wh- word doesn't excuse you from the flip. Skip it and the sentence starts to look like an embedded question instead.

ての Building one

Common Mistake

How do you think about the new plan?

What do you think about the new plan?

how はねるで、How do you think? What do you call it in English?、どうやってう? How do you say it in English? です。

You're asking for the content of the thought, which is the object of think, so what is the word. How asks about method, and "How do you think?" turns into a question about the mechanics of thinking. The test is what the answer looks like: content takes what, method takes how. "What do you call it in English?" asks for a word; "How do you say it in English?" asks about the manner of saying it.

  • What ... for? Asks about purpose. Blunter than why, and it can sound like a complaint.
  • How long does it take? The standard way to ask about duration, with take carrying the sense of requiring time.
  • What kind of ...? Asks about type. Unlike which, it doesn't need a list of candidates on the table.
  • How about ...? せず、ろはか -ing(くだけたでは How about we …? The set way to make a suggestion. No inversion; a noun or -ing form follows, though casual speech also allows a clause, as in How about we split it?

Summary

What do you think?。 Ask for an opinion with "What do you think?" — not how.
Content takes what; method takes how.
  • How come だけはしない。 How come is the one that takes no inversion.
