as ... as の中身は原級です。「比べているから比較級」という引力に負けて taller を入れると、枠が壊れます。「as の挟み撃ちの中は素の形」と覚えてください。
Inside the as-sandwich, the adjective stays plain. The pull of "comparison = comparative" sneaks taller in and breaks the frame. Rule of thumb: between the two as's, base form only.
