短い語は -er(taller)、長い語は more(more expensive)、比べる相手は than で導入——比較級の骨格はこれだけです。分かれ目はおおむね音節数: 1音節は -er、3音節以上は more、2音節は y で終われば -ier(easier)、それ以外は more が安全。better / worse / further(米では距離に farther も)などの不規則組は丸暗記です。
Short words take -er (taller), long words take more (more expensive), and the rival arrives via than. The dividing line is roughly syllable count: one syllable → -er; three or more → more; two syllables ending in -y → -ier (easier), otherwise more is the safe bet. Memorize the main irregulars — better, worse, further (American English prefers farther for distance) — and the skeleton is nearly complete.

なぜ2本立てなのか。tall + er は言いやすいけれど、expensive + er は舌がもつれる——発音の都合が文法になった形です。だから迷ったら「言いやすいか」で判定できます。2音節語はグレーゾーンで、simple → simpler / simple → more simple のように両方使われる語もあります。迷ったら more に逃げるのが実戦の知恵です。
Why two routes? Because tall + er rolls off the tongue and expensive + er trips over itself — pronunciation convenience hardened into grammar. So when in doubt, test by mouth. Two-syllable words are the gray zone (simpler and more simple both circulate); when unsure, more is the safe escape.

-er(短い語)
1音節+ y 終わりの2音節。tall → taller、easy → easier。One syllable, plus -y two-syllable words: taller, easier.

more(長い語)
3音節以上と、多くの2音節語。more famous / more careful。Three-plus syllables, and most two-syllable words.
She's more famous than her sister now.

よくある間違い / Common Mistake
×This phone is more cheaper than mine.
このスマホは私のより安い。(のつもりで)
○This phone is cheaper than mine.
このスマホは私のより安い。
more と -er は同じ仕事の二重取りなので、重ねられません(more better も同罪)。どちらか片方だけ。「強めたい」ときは much cheaper のように much を使います(専用エントリ「比較級の強め方」参照)。
More and -er do the same job, so stacking them double-charges the sentence (more better commits the same crime). Pick one route. To intensify, reach for much — much cheaper (see its own entry).
better than nothingないよりまし比較の相手を「ゼロ」に設定した最低ラインの慰め。The rival set to zero — comfort at the floor.
easier said than done言うは易く行うは難しsaid と done を比較級で対決させたことわざ。Said vs. done, settled by comparative — proverb form.
sooner rather than later早めに(先送りせず)「遅くよりは早く」。ビジネスの締め切り前倒し表現。Early beats late — the deadline-nudging phrase.
