be born のたち(日本語がずれる) Born, Delayed, Injured: Where Japanese and English Swap Voices

The Passive

まれる」はでは: I was born in Osaka.(まれた)。じように、日本語ではなのに一群あります: be injured(けがをする)、be delayed(れる)、be raised(つ)、be located(する)。「でも」のを、ここでってしまいましょう。

"To be born" is always passive in English: I was born in Osaka. A whole squad of verbs works this way — active in Japanese, passive in English: be injured, be delayed, be raised, be located. Let's build the conversion table once and for all.

は「からきたこと」とている

English Sees These as Done to You

の bear(む)ので、まれるは「まれる」——だから be born。で、injure(つける)のだから be injured、delay(らせる)のだから be delayed。日本語が「まれる・けがする・れる」ときのようにうところを、は「からきたこと」としてる。カメラのきがごとにうだけで、どちらもしいです。

In English, bear takes the mother as its subject; the baby sits on the receiving end, hence be born. Same logic down the line: you're on the receiving end of injure (be injured) and of delay (be delayed). Where Japanese frames these as your own motion — まれる、けがする、れる — English films them as things that happened to you. Different camera angles on the same world, both valid.

よくある Common Mistake

My grandfather borned in 1950.

は1950まれた。(のつもりで)

My grandfather was born in 1950.

は1950まれた。

born をのようにさせた borned というしません。born はで、として使うときはず be とセット(was born / were born)。「まれる=」の日本語が、be をとさせるです。生年月日は was born、とごとえてください(a born leader「まれながらのリーダー」や Kobe-born のようなな born は)。

There's no verb "borned": born is a past participle that, as a sentence's main verb, never travels without be: was born, were born. The Japanese sense of まれる as active motion is what makes the be drop out. Lock in the frame whole: was born. (Adjective-style born — a born leader, Kobe-born — is a separate use.)

  • born and raised in ... まれ〜 出身セット。一言に。 The hometown formula — first line of introductions.
  • be caught in the rain にわかにあう まる」の。get caught in も(get り)。 Captured by the rain — get caught in works too, change-flavored.
  • be stuck in traffic にはまっている 「はまる」も Another swapped voice — the world's standard lateness excuse.
  • be dressed in ... 〜をている 。She was dressed in black.(ずくめだった) The state passive of attire: She was dressed in black.

まとめ Summary

  • まれる= be born。borned というい。 まれる = be born — "borned" doesn't exist.

  • でも、のつ。 Keep the Japanese-active → English-passive table handy.
  • は be、は get(married のえる)。 States ride be; changes ride get — remember the married pair.
