by と until(〜までに/〜まで)By or Until? Deadlines vs. Duration
前置詞 / Prepositions
by は「その時までに完了」(締め切り)、until は「その時までずっと」(継続)。日本語はどちらも「まで」なので混ざりやすい、絶好の引っかけポイントです。提出は by Friday、営業は until 9 p.m.。
By means done before that time: a deadline. Until means continuing up to that time: a duration. Submit by Friday; stay open until 9 p.m. One little word decides whether you're finishing or lasting.

by の絵は「その時刻の手前のどこかで、ポンと1回完了」。until の絵は「その時刻まで、ずっと状態が続く」。選び方は動詞で決まります。finish・submit・arrive のような1回きりの動作は by。stay・wait・work のような続く動作は until です。
By paints one snap of completion, somewhere before the hour. Until paints a state stretching all the way to it. The verb decides: one-shot actions (finish, submit, arrive) take by; ongoing ones (stay, wait, work) take until.

提出は1回きりの動作なので by です。until にすると「金曜までずっと提出し続ける」という妙な絵になります。ビジネスメールで頻出のミスなので、締め切り= by と体に入れてください。
Submitting happens once, so it takes by. With until, the picture warps into somehow submitting continuously all week. This slip loves business emails — hard-wire deadline = by.
by the time ...〜する頃までには文で旗を立てる by。過去完了の相棒でもある。Planting the flag with a clause — also the past perfect's partner.
until now今まで(は)「今までずっと」の線。「ここで変わった」という含みが出る。The line reaches now — with a hint that things just changed.
not ... until ...〜になって初めて…「旗までは起きない」を裏返した強調形。The store doesn't open until ten.(10時にならないと開かない)The flag flipped negative: nothing happens before it. The store doesn't open until ten.
by now今頃はもう「今」という旗の手前で完了しているはず、という推測。She should be home by now.The flag is now, and the finishing should already have happened: She should be home by now.
