few と little(a の有無で明暗) Few, A Few, Little, A Little
Nouns & Number
a few / a little は「少しある」(前向き)。
A few and a little mean "some — enough to mention" (glass half full). Drop the a and few / little turn into "hardly any" (glass nearly empty). One little a flips the mood. The other axis is simple: few counts, little measures.
The A Points at Presence
I have a few friends here. I have few friends here. a little / little も同じ関係です(a little hope =望みはある/ little hope =望み薄)。
I have a few friends here reports the friends you do have — upbeat. I have few friends here mourns the ones you don't — downcast. The quantity may be identical; what changes is whether you're looking at the presence or the absence. A little and little mirror the pair exactly: a little hope keeps hope alive; little hope has nearly given up.
Same amount, opposite mood
We still have a little time before the train.
Presence — a bit of breathing room.
There's little time to waste.
Absence — the clock is winning.
A few people stayed to help clean up.
Countables take the few family.
a few / a little
Some — and glad of it.
I know a little Spanish.
few / little
Hardly any — with a sigh. Leans written.
Few people know this place.
Common Mistake
I have few friends here, so let's have a party!
I have a few friends here, so let's have a party!
Bare few laments the shortage — which crashes head-on into the party plan and leaves your listener puzzled. For the upbeat "I've got some," it must be a few. Dropping the a derails the meaning.
- quite a few かなりの数の a few(ある側)を quite で増幅。 Quite amplifies the a few — so it means many, not few.
- a little bit ほんの少し a little をさらに柔らげた口語の定番。a little bit tired(ちょい疲れた)。 A little, softened further — a little bit tired.
- few and far between Scarce in number and spaced far apart — the idiom of rarity.
- little by little 少しずつ 小さな量の積み重ね。 Small amounts, stacked — the idiom of steady progress.
