if と in case の If or In Case? Backup-Plan Grammar

Conditionals & Subjunctive

in case は「〜するといけないから(のうちにえる)」、if は「〜したら(そのときく)」。Take an umbrella in case it rains. は、if it rains ならってからえがか、か——それがかれです。

In case means "because it might happen — so prepare now." If means "when it happens — act then." Take an umbrella in case it rains puts the umbrella in your bag before any rain; with if, you'd reach for it only once the drops start. Prepare first, or react later: that's the split.

えの in case、反応の if

In Case Prepares; If Reacts

in case のろの出来事は「こるかもしれない」、そしては「そのにやっておくこと」です。Take my number in case you get lost.(ったときのためにしておくね)——すのは。if だとします。I'll call you if I get lost.(ったらする)——するのはったなんです。

The event after in case is a maybe-future, and the main clause happens before it, as insurance: Take my number in case you get lost (the number changes hands now). If flips the arrow: I'll call you if I get lost (the call comes after the getting-lost). Two opposite arrows of time.

きを Watch the arrow

Take my number in case you get lost.

ったときのために、しておくね。

えは出来事はその(きないかも)。 The insurance comes now; the event later, if ever.

よくある Common Mistake

Let's buy some wine if your parents visit tomorrow.

るといけないから、ワインをっておこう。(のつもりで)

Let's buy some wine in case your parents visit tomorrow.

るといけないから、ワインをっておこう。

if だと「たら(それから)いにこう」になり、いません。「っておく」というえのは in case。日本語の「〜するといけないから」は、ほぼ in case のです。

With if, the buying waits until the parents are already at the door — too late. Stocking up beforehand is insurance, and insurance speaks in case. The Japanese 「〜するといけないから」 is practically a flashing in-case sign.

  • just in case のため えの一言で。すだけで使える Insurance in two words — tack it onto almost any sentence.
  • in case of emergency 。in case of + はこの「〜のは」 The signage flagship — in case of + noun means "in the event of."
  • in any case いずれにせよ 「どのケースでも」からじたえの in case とは "Whatever the case" — a discourse marker, not the insurance in case.
  • in that case それなら けてえる The standard pivot after new information: well then.

まとめ Summary
