(children・feet・data) Irregular Plurals: Children, Feet, Data

Nouns & Number

-s をけないは2系統。①り: children・men・women・feet・teeth・mice ②(ラテン・ギリシャ): data・criteria・phenomena。それに sheep・fish のわります。ないので、えればくありません。

Plurals that skip the -s come in two families: (1) Old English survivors: children, men, women, feet, teeth, mice; (2) Latin and Greek imports: data, criteria, phenomena. Add the no-change crew — sheep, fish — and that's the whole zoo. Learn the families, not just the words.

Two Families and the No-Change Crew

はかつてりもありました。-s がったも、使だけがのままっています(child → children、foot → feet、mouse → mice)。もう1系統いラテン・ギリシャで、-um/-on → -a(datum → data、phenomenon → phenomena)、-is → -es(analysis → analyses)などのちます。

English once had several plural systems. After -s conquered the language, only the most frequently used words kept their old forms — child → children, foot → feet, mouse → mice. The other family lives in academic vocabulary, imported from Latin and Greek with patterns like -um/-on → -a (datum → data, phenomenon → phenomena) and -is → -es (analysis → analyses).

child のは children。(children・men・women・people・feet・teeth)は、てはめるえるべきグループです。ネイティブのも childs・foots とえながらえます——じです。

Child pluralizes to children. The high-frequency irregulars — children, men, women, people, feet, teeth — are the learn-by-heart priority list. Native toddlers say "childs" and "foots" too before they get there; it's the same road.

  • men and women ペア。man/men のえは woman/women ではきくわる(ウィミン)。 The most frequent irregular pair — and women's pronunciation shifts more than its spelling shows.
  • children's ... ども(たち)の〜 は children's(s のに ' ではない)。children's books()。 Irregular plurals possess with 's: children's books.
  • the data shows ... データは〜をしている では the data show も(わせる)。 The modern business default — academia keeps the data show alive. Follow the house.
  • criteria / criterion (/) criterion をれがち。a criteria はにはり(ただし実際にする)。 The singular criterion is the forgotten half — "a criteria" is nonstandard, though you'll hear it.
