may と might(かもしれない) May or Might? Guessing Out Loud
助動詞 Modal Verbs
どちらも「かもしれない」。実際の確率の差はごくわずかで、might のほうが少し控えめ・仮定寄りに響く程度です。迷ったら might を選べばまず自然。might は「may の過去形」として時制の一致でも登場します。
Both mean "maybe so." The real-world difference in probability is tiny — might just sounds a shade more tentative and hypothetical. When in doubt, might is the safe pick. It also serves as may's past form in reported speech.
実力差はわずか、住み分けはある
Nearly Twins — but They Keep Different Company
現代英語の推量では、may と might はほぼ交換可能です。教科書の「may は50%・might は30%」のような数字は目安にすぎません。実際の住み分けは響きと場面: might は口語の主役で、仮の話に強い。may はやや形式ばった文や、天気予報・報道のような客観的な文でよく見ます。
For guesses, modern English treats may and might as near-interchangeable — the textbook percentages ("may 50%, might 30%") are rough at best. The real division is tone and habitat: might rules casual speech and hypothetical talk, while may shows up in slightly formal prose — forecasts, news reports, official notices.
どちらでも通じる、けれど Either works — but note the homes
It might rain — take an umbrella just in case.
降るかもしれないから、念のため傘を持っていきなよ。
口語は might が主役。 Casual speech runs on might.
Heavy rain may cause delays.
大雨により遅れが出る場合があります。
告知・報道調の may。 The announcement register — may's habitat.
She said she might be late.
彼女は遅れるかもと言っていた。
時制の一致では might が基本(可能性が今も生きていれば may のままも普通)。 In reported speech, might is the default — though may often stays when the possibility is still live.
may
やや形式ばった推量。告知・書き言葉に多い。 The slightly formal guess — notices and print.
This product may contain nuts.
本製品はナッツ類を含む場合があります。
might
口語の主役。仮の話・控えめな推量に。 The everyday guess — tentative and hypothetical.
I might go, I might not.
行くかもしれないし、行かないかも。
よくある間違い Common Mistake
Maybe he might come to the party.
彼、パーティーに来るかもしれない。(のつもりで)
He might come to the party.
彼、パーティーに来るかもしれない。
maybe と might はどちらも「かも」なので、重ねると「かもかも」の二重掛けになります。どちらか1つで十分。Maybe he'll come. でも He might come. でも同じ意味です。
Maybe and might both carry the "perhaps," so stacking them says it twice. Pick one: Maybe he'll come or He might come — same meaning, single dose.
- might as well どうせなら〜しよう 「選択肢に差がない→ならばこれで」という理屈の慣用。 "No option beats this one — so let's." Logic frozen into idiom.
- may or may not 〜かもしれないし、そうでないかも 五分五分を正直に言う定番。含みを持たせた告白にも使う。 The honest fifty-fifty — also a wink: I may or may not have eaten your pudding.
- might want to ... 〜するといいかもしれません 助言を「かも」まで薄めた柔らかい言い方。 Advice diluted to a maybe — soft and safe.
- come what may 何が起ころうとも 文語の固定表現。祈願・接続法の may(来るなら来い)の古い語順の名残。 A literary fossil — old word order preserved in amber.
