(the book I read) The Book I Read: Dropping the Relative

Relative Clauses

the book that I read(んだ)の that は、するのがです: the book I read。できるのはのときだけ——は「+くか」。くならとせる、がいきなりるならとせない。この1ルールで、の「++」のなりがめるようになります。

In the book that I read, dropping the that is the spoken norm: the book I read. Only object relatives can vanish — the test is whether subject + verb follows the relative. If it does, drop away; if a verb comes straight after, the relative must stay. Master this one rule and the noun + subject + verb trains of spoken English untangle themselves.

Only Objects Can Vanish

the book (that) I read では、that は read のです。としても、の I read が「ここから」というになるので、れません。一方 the book that changed my life(えた)の that はとすと the book changed my life というしたえてしまい、接着けます。「ろに+とせる/いきなりとせない」——できます。

In the book (that) I read, the that is read's object. Object relatives can go because the I read right after still flags "description starting here." But in the book that changed my life, the that is the clause's subject — remove it and the words collapse into a freestanding sentence, unglued. Subject + verb after the relative → droppable; bare verb → keep it. The check is mechanical.

This crash over-extends "relatives can drop" to subjects. With the who gone, speaks has no subject and the glue fails. Run the one test: does subject + verb follow? Here a bare verb follows — the who stays.

  • the way I see it てでは the way (that) ... のきの The way (that) …, dropped — the opinion opener.
