The past perfect — had done — steps one notch further back from a past moment. Use it only to rewind inside a story that's already in the past. It never stands alone: it always needs a past reference point to lean on.
過去の中の「もっと前」

When I got to the station, the train had already left. 駅に着いた(過去)より前に、電車は出ていた(さらに前)。時間を語る場面では、この「時間差」を出すのが過去完了の本業です(仮定法の if I had done は別の顔)。カメラを過去に置き、そこから振り返る。現在完了の「今から振り返る」を、まるごと過去へずらした形です。
When I got to the station, the train had already left. Arriving is past; the train leaving is further past — and when it talks about time, marking that gap is the past perfect's main job (it leads a second life in unreal conditionals like if I had done). Plant the camera at a past moment and look back from there. It's the present perfect's move, shifted wholesale into the past.
基準の過去より前Before the reference point

着いたときには、映画はもう始まっていた。
「到着」が基準。その前の「開始」が過去完了。Arriving is the reference; the starting happened before it.
I realized I hadこの文の組み立て【過去完了】過去のある時点を基準にして、それより前に起きたことを言う形。話の中で時間を一段さかのぼるときに使う。left my phone at home.
スマホを家に忘れてきたと気づいた。
「気づいた」時点より前の「忘れた」。The leaving-behind predates the realizing.
had done(時間差あり)
出来事が順番を入れ替えて語られるときの目印。Marks events told out of order.
The party had ended by the time we got there.
着いた頃には、パーティーは終わっていた。
did → did(順番どおり)
起きた順に語るなら、過去形を並べるだけでいい。Telling events in order? Plain past is enough.
The classic misuse: reaching for had done just because something feels long ago. Distance in time isn't the trigger — a rewind inside a past story is. No reference point, no past perfect.
had already ...すでに〜してしまっていた基準時点より前に完了、の代表形。already が時間差を強調する。Done before the reference moment — already underlines the gap.
by the time ...〜する頃までには基準時点を自分で設定する言い方。過去完了の相棒。It sets the reference point itself — the past perfect's favorite partner.
It was the first time I had ever ...〜したのは、それが初めてだった「その時点までの人生」で初。経験の現在完了を過去に置いた形。First in your life up to that moment — the perfect of experience, moved into the past.
No sooner had I ... than ...〜するやいなや入れ違いの強調が極まった文語の倒置形。書き言葉で出会う。The near-miss dialed to maximum — a literary inversion you'll meet in writing.
まとめ / Summary
過去完了=過去の基準点より「さらに前」。Past perfect = one step further back than a past reference point.
基準なしの単独使用はしない。昔の話でも過去形でいい。Never alone — long ago by itself just takes the simple past.
順番どおりに語るなら、過去形の連続で十分。Events told in order need only the simple past.
by the time・already と相性がいい。It pairs naturally with by the time and already.
