「10年住んでいます」のように、過去に始まって今も続くことは現在完了(+ for / since)で言います。動きのある動詞なら have been -ing。過去から今まで、1本の線が伸びているイメージです。
Something that started in the past and is still true now takes the present perfect with for or since: I've lived here for ten years. For activities in progress, use have been -ing. Picture a line stretching from back then right up to now.

過去形の I lived here for ten years. は「10年住んだ(今は住んでいない)」。線が過去で切れています。I've lived here for ten years. は線が今につながっていて、「今も住んでいる」まで伝わります。for は線の長さ、since は線の始点です。

live・work・know など「状態」の動詞はこの形でOK。State verbs — live, work, know — are fine in the plain perfect.
I've worked at this company for five years.
この会社で働いて5年になる。
I've been living here
-ing 形は「活動が続いている」感じが強まる。live・work はどちらも可。The -ing version highlights ongoing activity. With live and work, both are fine.
I've been living with my parents lately.
最近は実家で暮らしている。
よくある間違い / Common Mistake
×I am living here for ten years.
ここに10年住んでいます。(のつもりで)
○I've lived here for ten years.

「今〜している」の現在進行形に引っ張られるミスです。現在進行形は「今この瞬間」しか映せず、線の長さを運べません。期間(for ten years)が付いたら現在完了です。
The present continuous — I am living — only covers right now; it can't carry a length of time. The moment you add for ten years, you need the perfect: I've lived here.
How long have you ...?どのくらい〜しているの?線の長さを聞く質問。だから継続の現在完了とセット。You're asking the line's length — so it pairs with the perfect of duration.
so far今のところ「ここまでの線」を指す言葉。So far, so good. も同じ理屈。It points at the line up to here. So far, so good runs on the same logic.
all my life生まれてからずっと人生まるごとが線。I've lived here all my life.Your whole life is the line: I've lived here all my life.
for the past few yearsここ数年「今から振り返った直近の期間」。past と言いつつ、線は今につながっている。A stretch measured back from today — past in name, but the line touches now.
