お願いの丁寧さは階段になっています。Can you(気軽)→ Could you(職場の標準)→ Would you(改まった)→ Would you mind -ing?(最上段)。上の段ほど「直接さ」が下がる、が原理です。
Requests climb a politeness ladder: Can you (casual) → Could you (the workplace standard) → Would you (formal) → Would you mind -ing? (top rung). The higher you climb, the less direct the ask — that's the whole principle.

Could / Would が丁寧なのは、過去形だからです。過去形は「今ここ」から一歩引く印で、その距離が押しつけの弱さになる(詳しくは「なぜ would は丁寧なのか」)。もうひとつの軸は聞く中身: Can/Could you は「できるか」に触れ、Would you は「する意志があるか」に触れます。意志に触れるぶん、Would you は少し改まって響きます。
Could and would are polite because they're past forms — a step back from "right here, right now," and that distance softens the push (more in "Why Would Sounds Polite"). The other axis is what you're touching: Can/Could you asks about ability; Would you asks about willingness. Touching someone's will is a bigger deal, so Would you dresses up a notch.

Would you ...?
意志に触れる。Could とほぼ同格で、やや改まる(場面によっては指示調にも響く)。Touches willingness. Near-equal to could, a shade more formal — and in some settings it can edge toward an instruction.
Would you give us a moment?

よくある間違い / Common Mistake
×"Would you mind closing the window?" "Yes."
「窓を閉めていただけますか」「はい(閉めますね)」(のつもりで)
○"Would you mind closing the window?" "Not at all."
「窓を閉めていただけますか」「ええ、かまいませんよ」
mind は「嫌がる」なので、質問の直訳は「閉めるのは嫌ですか?」。Yes と答えると「嫌です」になってしまいます。引き受けるなら Not at all. / Of course not. が教科書どおりの形。実際の会話では Sure! と答える人も多く、文脈で通じます。
Mind means "object to," so the question literally asks "would closing it bother you?" Answer yes and you've refused. The textbook acceptances are Not at all or Of course not — though in real life plenty of people just say Sure!, and context carries it.
Could you possibly ...?もし可能でしたら〜していただけますかpossibly が可能性をさらに仮定に寄せて、一段丁寧になる。Possibly pushes the ask deeper into the hypothetical — one rung up.
I was wondering if you could ...〜していただけないかと思いまして過去進行形で二重に距離を取った最上級の遠慮。改まった依頼メールの定番。Past progressive stacks distance on distance — the gold standard for delicate emails.
Do you think you could ...?〜してもらえたりしますか「あなたの見立て」を挟んで直接さを下げる口語の段。Routing through "your judgment" softens the directness — a spoken favorite.
Would you mind if I ...?〜してもよろしいですか依頼でなく許可を求める版。mind の理屈は同じ。The permission-seeking cousin — same mind logic.
