should と had better(忠告の強さ) Should vs. Had Better: Advice with Teeth
Modal Verbs
For ordinary advice, should is your word. Had better carries a warning — "or something bad will happen" — which makes it stronger than should, not weaker. If you learned had better as the gentle option, that memory needs overwriting.
Had Better Comes with an "Or Else"
Should offers general advice: "it'd be a good idea." Had better issues an urgent warning: "in this situation, skip it and something bad follows." That's why had better only sounds natural when the bad outcome is in view — and why aiming it at a superior lands like a threat. Steer clear upward.

おすすめ・提案は should(または Why don't you ...?)で。
Recommend with had better and you've accidentally threatened your listener — "go, or else." This is the classic accident caused by the textbook gloss "~したほうがよい." For recommendations, it's should (or Why don't you …?).
- You'd better not ... The negative warning — full strength, guaranteed.
- I'd better go. Self-directed, it's just "yikes, time to go" — zero sting, constant use.
- Maybe you should ... Maybe pads should down to the gentlest rung of advice.
- You might want to ... Advice diluted to a hint — a business favorite.
