to と for(〜に/〜のために) To or For? Who Gets It, and How
前置詞 Prepositions
give・send・show のような「手渡し系」は to(相手に届く矢印)。buy・make・cook のような「代行系」は for(相手のためにやっておく)。矢印が相手に届かないと完了しない動作か、相手不在でも完了する動作か、で見分けます。
Hand-over verbs — give, send, show — take to: an arrow that reaches the receiver. Do-it-for-them verbs — buy, make, cook — take for: you act on someone's behalf. The test: does the action need the receiver there to land, or not?
届く to、代わりの for
To Reaches; For Covers
give it to me の to は、物が私まで届く矢印です。受け取る相手がいないと、give は完了しません。buy a present for me の for は「私のために」。私がその場にいなくても、買う行為は完了します。動詞ごとの丸暗記に見えて、実はこの1本の理屈でほぼ仕分けられます。
In give it to me, to is the arrow the thing travels along — giving can't finish without a receiver. In buy a present for me, the buying finishes fine even if I'm nowhere near the store; for marks whose sake it's for. It looks like verb-by-verb memorization, but this one distinction sorts nearly all of them.
矢印が届くか、代わりにやるか Reaching them, or covering for them
She sent the photos to her mother.
彼女は母親に写真を送った。
届く矢印の to。 The arrow reaches her mother — to.
She made lunch for the kids.
彼女は子どもたちに昼食を作った。
子どもが台所にいなくても「作る」は完了する。だから for。 The making finishes even with the kids elsewhere — for.
Can you explain the rule to me?
そのルールを私に説明してくれる?
説明は聞き手に届いて初めて完了 → to。 Explaining only lands when it reaches the listener — to.
to me, ...
「私に言わせれば」。判断・見え方の届け先。 "In my judgment" — where the verdict lands.
To me, this plan seems risky.
私に言わせれば、この計画は危うい。
for me, ...
「私にとっては」。自分の事情・都合の話。 "In my case" — how it works out for you.
For me, mornings are the hardest.
私にとっては、朝がいちばんつらい。
よくある間違い Common Mistake
She bought a present to me.
彼女は私にプレゼントを買ってくれた。(のつもりで)
She bought a present for me.
彼女は私にプレゼントを買ってくれた。
buy は「相手不在でも完了する」代行系なので for です。to を使うと、買った物を手渡しに来る矢印まで含んだような、据わりの悪い文になります。
Buying is a do-it-for-them verb — it completes without you there — so it takes for. With to, the sentence strains toward a hand-delivery that buy doesn't contain.
- It's for you. あなたに(です)/あなた宛てです プレゼントも電話の取り次ぎもこれ。「あなた宛て」の for。 Gifts and phone calls alike — meant for you.
- What ... for? 何のために? 用途・目的を聞く for。What's this button for?(このボタンは何用?) For probes purpose: What's this button for?
- go to work 仕事に行く 到達点の to。方向の矢印はぜんぶ to の家系。 The destination to — every arrow of direction belongs to this family.
- thanks to ... 〜のおかげで 感謝が届く先を指す to が、原因の言い方に転じた慣用。 The to of where thanks are owed, repurposed as a cause: thanks to you.
