which と that の使 Which or That?

Relative Clauses

Two practical points cover it. One: with commas (non-restrictive), it must be which — universal agreement. Two: without commas (restrictive), American style guides push that, while British English uses which freely. The everywhere-safe recipe: no comma → that; comma → which.

実態

The Map of Rule and Reality

the emails that need a reply(るメール——み)/ this email, which arrived last night(このメールは、ゆうべいたのだが——)。

The emails that need a reply (narrowing) versus this email, which arrived last night (aside). Restrictive that is the American editorial norm — AP, Chicago, and corporate style guides enforce it — while British writers use restrictive which without a blink. So a restrictive which isn't wrong; it just fails American copyediting. The safe drive: no comma, use that.

みと Narrowing vs. aside

files that are older than a なぜ a なのか 【「つの」という つであることにがあるの a。 year.

どのファイルかをる that(コンマなし)。 Narrowing which files — that, no comma.

This report, which took us a なぜ a なのか 【「つの」という つであることにがあるの a。 month, is finally done.

の which(コンマあり)。 The aside — which with commas. That is barred here.

train that leaves at nine is usually crowded.

Picking one train out of many.

that(コンマなし・み)

Pins down which one — the American editorial pick.

I like books that make me think.

which(コンマあり・)

Adds facts to something already identified — universal.

My bike, which I bought in 2020, still runs fine.

Common Mistake

My hometown that is famous for hot springs is in Kyushu.

My hometown, which is famous for hot springs, is in Kyushu.

My hometown is already unique, so restricting it ("the hometown that's famous for hot springs") implies you keep several. Facts about an already-identified noun ride the comma + which aside. The full mechanics live in the comma-relatives entry.

  • the one that ... the one that broke(れたやつ)。 Casual narrowing's workhorse: the one that broke.
  • , which means ... The aside which at its busiest — unpacking what you just said.
  • all that ... 〜するすべて all・everything・only のは that が。All that glitters is not gold. After all, everything, only, that owns the seat: All that glitters…
  • , which is why ... Grabs the whole previous clause and turns it into a reason.
