while には3つの働きがあります。時間の「〜する間に」、対比の「〜だが」、そして並列の「一方で」。どれになるかは中身で決まります。そして接続詞の while なら、後ろには必ず文が来ます。名詞を置きたいときは during です(なお for a while の while は「時間の一区切り」を指す名詞で、接続詞とは別語です)。
While does three jobs: it marks time (during the period when), it marks contrast (although), and it sets two things side by side (whereas). Which one you get depends on the content, not the shape. One thing never changes: the conjunction while takes a full clause. If you want a noun there, you need during. (The while in for a while is a separate word — a noun meaning a stretch of time.)

Time-while says two events overlap. Contrast-while works like although and turns the direction in the second half. Parallel-while lines up two facts to show the gap between them. The clue is overlap: if the two clauses share a stretch of time, it's the time sense. If they don't, you're looking at contrast or comparison.
3つの顔The three senses

対比。although に置き換えられる。書き言葉で頻出。Contrast. Although would fit here. Common in writing.

並列。2つの事実を対比して並べる。Comparison. Two facts held up against each other.
while(接続詞・後ろは文)
主語と動詞のそろった文が続く。主語が同じなら -ing に縮められる。A subject and verb follow. If the subject matches, it can shrink to an -ing form.
While waiting for the bus, I read a chapter.
バスを待つ間に、一章読んだ。
during(前置詞・後ろは名詞)
名詞しか置けない。時間の意味だけで、対比には使えない。Takes only a noun, and it covers time alone. It can't do contrast.
During the meeting, my phone kept buzzing.
会議の間ずっと、携帯が鳴り続けた。
よくある間違い / Common Mistake
×During I was waiting, I read a chapter.
待っている間に一章読んだ。(のつもりで)
○While I was waiting, I read a chapter.
待っている間に一章読んだ。
during の後ろに文を置いた形です。during は名詞用の前置詞なので、I was waiting は差さりません。直し方は2つ。文を残すなら while に替える。during を残すなら during the wait のように名詞へ縮める。日本語では「〜の間」がどちらも同じ形なので、混ざりやすい組み合わせです。
This drops a clause into during, which only takes nouns. Two repairs: keep the clause and switch to while, or keep during and shrink the clause to a noun, as in "during the wait." The pair is easy to mix up because a single expression covers both in many languages.
whereas〜であるのに対し対比専用なので曖昧さが出ない。書き言葉寄り。Contrast only, so no ambiguity. Leans written.
meanwhileその間に／一方で接続副詞なので前をピリオドで切る。while とは差し込み口が違う。A connective adverb, so the sentence before it ends. A different socket from while.
while you're at itついでに「その作業をしている間に」から生まれた定型。会話で頻出。Grew out of the time sense. Everyday spoken English.
all the whileその間ずっと副詞句。文の後ろに置いて継続を強める。An adverb phrase that trails the sentence and stresses the whole stretch.
for a whileしばらくの間ここでの while は名詞で「時間の一区切り」。接続詞の while とは別の顔。Here while is a noun meaning a stretch of time, not the conjunction at all.
