a と the の使い分け A or The?

Articles

Here's the short version: use the when your listener knows which one you mean, and a when they don't. That one idea settles most article questions.

One Rule Does Most of the Work

Think of the as "that one — you know the one," and a as "one of many, doesn't matter which." If you and your listener are picturing the same thing, use the. If not, use a. Nearly every rule in the grammar books boils down to this.

Stories start with a and continue with the

I bought a car last week.

だから a。 Your listener hasn't met this car yet — so it's a.

The car is small, but I love it.

Now you both know which car — so it becomes the.

Side by Side

a

New on the scene. Any one will do.

Can I borrow a pen?

the

The one you both have in mind.

Can I borrow the pen?

Common Mistake

Yesterday I watched the movie.

Yesterday I watched a movie.

だから a movie。

As an opener, your listener has no idea which movie you mean, so it's a movie. "The movie" only works when a specific movie is already on both your minds — one you'd talked about before, say.
