使いすぎ(き) Easy on the Passive: English Prefers Active

The Passive

一則は「に、があるときだけ」。日本語の「〜されている」をすると、のような調になります。「このではパンがられている」→ This shop sells bread.——えてが、らしさのかれです。

Rule one of English style: default to active; go passive only for a reason. Translating every Japanese 〜されている into a passive produces paperwork prose. 「このではパンがられている」→ This shop sells bread — the skill of switching subjects to stay active is where natural English begins.

「されている」を

Converting されている Back to Active

日本語は「〜されている」を頻繁使いますが、するくはです。のコツはえ: 「このくのされている」→ Many people love this song.(に)/「世界中されている」→ People speak English all over the world.——ただしこれは English is spoken worldwide. もじくらい(がどうでもいい)。「がするかえる? えるなら一候」とえるのが実戦です。

Japanese reaches for 〜されている constantly, but much of it translates best as English actives. The trick is re-seating the subject: 「このくのされている」→ Many people love this song. For 「世界中されている」, the passive English is spoken worldwide is equally natural — a textbook doer-doesn't-matter case. The working question: can you name the doer? If yes, active is candidate number one.

えの Re-seating in action

This shop sells fresh bread every morning.

このではきたてのパンがられている。

られている」→ The shop takes the wheel — active.

You can see Mt. Fuji from here on clear days.

れたにはここから富士山られる。

られる」→一般 you でに。 Generic you converts the potential passive.

The なぜ the なのか 【そのつにまる】 のいるで、どれをすかつにまるから the。日本語なら「(の)」「うちの」をってむとい。 report says sales are up 20%.

には売上が2かれている。

かれている」→モノをにする say The report itself speaks — the say frame.

(モード)

We made a mistake.

(があるとき)

した・ぼかしたいとき()。 Doer unknown, irrelevant, or deliberately blurred.

ミスがありました。(の、とはわない)

よくある Common Mistake

Ramen is loved by many people in Japan, and it is eaten by them at famous shops.

日本ではラーメンがくのされていて、べられている。(のつもりで)

Many people in Japan love ramen and line up at famous shops to eat it.

日本ではくのがラーメンをしていて、んでべている。

文法ミスはゼロですが、by 調です。「されている・べられている」の「されている」は、ではにしたでいきいきします。使うのは、したわないがあるときだけ——このフィルターをしてからめてください。

Zero grammar errors, maximum translationese. Chains of by-passives are its signature. The されている of loving and eating comes alive in English as people-subject actives. Run every passive through the filter — is there a reason not to name the doer? — before you write it.

  • The sign says ... には〜とかれている かれている」をモノ say で The standard conversion: the sign itself speaks.
  • You can find ... / You'll see ... 〜がられる・つかる られる」を一般 you のへ。 The potential passive, re-seated on generic you — tour-guide grammar.

  • be considered ... 〜とみなされている うときは(みなす一般)。のある A justified passive — the considering is done by everyone at once.
