at の(いをめて一点す) At: Taking Aim at a Point

Prepositions

での使は「の in / on / at」「の in / on / at」でっています。

At strips away extent and points at something as a single spot. Its use with times and places is covered by the entries on in, on, and at for time and for place. What this one looks at is the same picture extended into the abstract: look at aims your gaze at one point, good at means skilled at one particular thing, and throw at shows how taking aim can turn hostile.

Narrow It to a Point and It Becomes Aim

だからけるがよく、look at / stare at / point at のようにびます。 shout at と shout to のはここにます。

What at points to has no extent: a single spot. That makes it the natural partner of verbs about directing your gaze or attention, which is why we get look at, stare at, and point at. Push one step further and the sense of taking aim appears. From the receiving end, something is being directed your way, and that can register as hostility. It's exactly what separates shout at from shout to.

Directing it at one point

She's very good at める 【good at = 〜が be good at + -ing。bad at・terrible at もじ at。 explaining difficult ideas.

The one spot where the ability shows. It narrows the field.

Don't laugh at める 【laugh at = 〜をあざう】 laugh はれない。laugh him ✗。 doing his best.

The laughter is aimed at him, which is what makes it mockery.

growing at an なぜ an なのか めてつ】 がまだらないものをめてすから a。 alarming rate.

Numbers work as points too: rates, temperatures, prices.

at(いをめる)

Directed at a target, with intent to land, and it can read as hostile.

He threw a stone at the window.

to(ける)

Delivered to someone. It's a handover, so no hostility.

He threw the ball to his teammate.

Common Mistake

Pass me the ball — just throw it at me.

Pass me the ball — just throw it to me.

いが shout at(りつける)と shout to(くのびかける)、smile at(微笑みかける)と smile to oneself(ひとりでにやりとする)にもます。

With at, this reads as asking to be hit. At is the word for taking aim, so an intent to land comes across. When you throw so that someone can catch it, use to. The same split runs through shout at, which is yelling at someone, and shout to, which is calling across a distance, and through smile at someone and smile to yourself. Are they the target, or the destination? Getting it wrong sends hostility you didn't intend.
