(much better) Much Better: Turning Up a Comparative

Comparison

めるのは much・far・a lot・even で、very は使えません(very better は)。に「し」なら a bit / a little / slightly。

"Much better" is exactly that — much better. Comparatives take much, far, a lot, and even as amplifiers; very is locked out (no "very better"). For small differences, dial down with a bit, a little, slightly. Here's the whole volume knob.

Why Very Doesn't Work Here

めるのは「」の言葉——much()・a bit()。

Very turns up the intensity of a quality: very tall. But a comparative like taller doesn't name a quality — it names a gap. Gaps are measured in quantity, so quantity words do the amplifying: much (a wide gap), a bit (a narrow one). See that gaps take amounts, and the whole very-better ban explains itself.

very は(very good)、には much(much better)。「good には very、better には much」とえるとえます。ちなみに調は by far(by far the best =なしの)です。

Very serves plain adjectives (very good); comparatives call much (much better). Pair them: very good, much better. And for superlatives, the amplifier is by far — by far the best.
