good と well Good or Well?

形容詞・副詞 Adjectives & Adverbs

good は形容詞(良い)、well は副詞(上手に・うまく)——が基本線。ただし well には「健康だ」という形容詞の顔もあり(I'm well.)、口語の I'm good.(元気だよ/結構です)も現代では標準的。整理すれば怖くない代表的なペアです。

The baseline: good is the adjective, well is the adverb (skillfully, successfully). But well moonlights as an adjective meaning healthy (I'm well), and casual I'm good — "doing fine" or "no thanks" — is thoroughly standard today. Sort the layers once and this famous pair stops being scary.

3層に分けて整理する

Three Layers, Sorted Once

①名詞に掛けるなら good(a good singer =よい歌手)。②動作の上手さを言うなら well(She sings well. =歌がうまい)。③健康の話なら well が形容詞になる(Get well soon! =お大事に)。事故が起きるのは②で、日本語の「上手に」を good で言ってしまうパターンです。

Layer one: describing a noun takes good — a good singer. Layer two: describing how an action is done takes well — She sings well. Layer three: health talk turns well into an adjective — Get well soon! The accidents happen in layer two, where Japanese 上手に slips out as good.

He's a good cook.

彼は料理がうまい(よい料理人だ)。

名詞 cook に掛かる形容詞。 Adjective on the noun cook.

He cooks well.

彼は上手に料理する。

動作 cooks に掛かる副詞。 Adverb on the action cooks.

健康の well(形容詞)。お見舞いの定番。 Health well, the adjective — the get-well line.

good(形容詞)

名詞に掛ける。連結動詞の後にも(sounds good)。 On nouns — and after linking verbs: sounds good.

このコーヒー、本当においしい。

動作の質を言う。動詞の後ろに。 On how actions go — after the verb.

よくある間違い Common Mistake

She speaks English very good.

彼女は英語がとても上手だ。(のつもりで)

She speaks English very well.

彼女は英語がとても上手だ。

speaks という動作の上手さを言うので副詞の well です。speak good English(良い英語を話す)なら good が English に掛かるので成立——掛かる先が動作か名詞か、で決まります。なお口語の "You did good!"(よくやった!)のような flat な good も米口語には実在しますが、書き言葉では well が安全です。

You're rating the action of speaking, so it's the adverb well. Speak good English works too — there good hangs on English, the noun. It all turns on what the word attaches to. (Casual American does produce "You did good!" — but in writing, well is the safe call.)

  • Well done! よくやった! 「上手になされた」=称賛の定番。ステーキの焼き加減(ウェルダン)も同じ well。 "Done well" — the standard praise. The steak doneness is the same well.
  • I'm good, thanks. いえ、結構です(ありがとう)。 「足りている状態」の good。柔らかい断りの必須表現。 Good as "all set" — the essential soft refusal.
  • as well 〜も(また) too と同義の「〜も」。文末に置く。副詞 well の意外な出張先。 A synonym of too, sentence-final — well's surprising side job.
  • may as well / might as well どうせなら〜しよう as well(同じくらい良い)から生まれた慣用。may-vs-might の項とつながる。 Born from as well = "equally good" — links back to the might as well entry.

まとめ Summary
