hardly・lately・nearly(-ly でになる) Hardly, Lately, Nearly: When -ly Changes Everything

Adjectives & Adverbs

hard(熱心に)に -ly をけると hardly(ほとんど〜ない)——まったくになります。が late(く)/ lately()、near(く)/ nearly(ほとんど)、high(く)/ highly(いに)にも。「-ly =」の4組を、ここでまとめてまえます。

Add -ly to hard (with effort) and you get hardly (barely at all) — a different word entirely. The same trap runs through late / lately (recently), near / nearly (almost), and high / highly (very much). Here are the four pairs where the "-ly makes adverbs" formula betrays you, caught in one place.

Four Pairs Where -ly Switches Tracks

hard・late・near・high は、それがすでにとしてきます(work hard / stay up late / come near / jump high)。では -ly かというと、れてえたです: hardly(ほとんど〜ない)、lately()、nearly(ほとんど)、highly(いに・に)。「」とって使うと、になります。

Hard, late, near, and high already work as adverbs on their own: work hard, stay up late, come near, jump high. So what are the -ly forms? Separate words that have switched tracks from the physical to the abstract: hardly (barely), lately (recently), nearly (almost), highly (very much). Treat them as "the adverb form of the same word" and your sentences quietly change meaning.

Before and after the switch

She works hard.

熱心く。

hard Hard is already the adverb.

She hardly works.

はほとんどかない。

hardly は「ほぼゼロ」の Hardly means next to zero — and sits before the verb.

Have この きたことを、いまとびつけて。「いつきたか」ではなく「いまどうなっているか」にがある。だから yesterday のような一点とは一緒使えない。 you seen him lately? — He 's この まって、いまもいていることをが「わったこと」をるのにし、こちらは「いていること」をる。 been coming in late.

かけた? ——このところれててるよ。

lately()と late(く)の Lately (recently) and late (not on time), side by side.

hard / late / near / high

ろに。 Physical, concrete adverbs — after the verb.

The plane flew high above the clouds.

hardly / lately / nearly / highly

えたる。 Abstract track — frequency, time, degree.

The plan was highly successful.

よくある Common Mistake

I studied hardly for the exam.

けて一生した。(のつもりで)

I studied hard for the exam.

けて一生した。

hardly はいて I hardly studied とすると「ほとんどしなかった」というになります(ろの studied hardly は、としても)。「った」は hard のまま。この4組は -ly をけたわる——での hardly は、いちばんきいです。

Placed before the verb — I hardly studied — hardly confesses you barely studied at all, the exact opposite (and post-verb "studied hardly" is off in position as well as meaning). Effort stays with plain hard. In these four pairs the -ly changes trains entirely, and hardly-for-hard is the costliest misfire of them all.

  • hardly ever めったに〜ない hardly(ほぼゼロ)× ever(までの)=。never の一歩 Near-zero across all time — one step short of never.
  • highly recommended くおすすめ の highly の。レビュースタンプ。 Abstract highly's greatest hit — the review culture's stamp.
  • nearly there もうすぐ・あと 「ほとんどいた」。ましにもにも。 Almost arrived — for cheering on and status updates alike.
  • Lately, I've been ... 、〜している lately は()と Lately loves the present perfect — the opener for life updates.

まとめ Summary

  • hard・late・near・high は、そのままで Hard, late, near, high are adverbs as-is.
  • -ly (hardly・lately・nearly・highly)は The -ly forms are separate, abstract words.
  • った」は hard。hardly は Effort is hard — hardly detonates the opposite meaning.
  • hardly はでは not とねず、any む。 Hardly is a near-negative: standard English skips the not and pairs it with any.
