hardly / scarcely / barely(ほとんど〜ない) Hardly Is Not the Adverb of Hard

Negation

hardly は hard のではありません。としては hard からていますが、り、いまは「ほとんど〜ない」というします。He works hard.(一生く)と He hardly works.(ほとんどかない)はです。そして hardly はなので、では not をねません。はすでにいています。

Hardly is not the adverb form of hard. It's a separate word meaning almost not at all. "He works hard" and "he hardly works" say opposite things. And since hardly is itself a negative, standard English doesn't add a not to it. The umbrella is already open.

ゼロではないが、ゼロに

Almost Zero, but Not Zero

hardly / scarcely / barely は、とゼロのをつなぐです。I can hardly hear you. は「まったくこえない」ではなく「かろうじてこえる」。なのでのままにします。この3はほぼですが、barely だけは「かろうじていた」という達成りのみがることがあります。

Hardly, scarcely, and barely sit just short of zero. "I can hardly hear you" doesn't mean silence; it means the sound is only just getting through. Because they are negatives themselves, the verb stays in its positive form. The three overlap almost completely, though barely can lean toward the sense of only just managing it.

ゼロの Just short of zero

I could hardly believe what I was この のあるだったことをべておいて、そこへ出来事でよく使う。 seeing.

にしているものが、ほとんどじられなかった。

hardly がうので could は Hardly carries the negative, so could stays positive.

We barely made the なぜ the なのか ・only】 や first / last / only / くとつにまるので the がる。 last train.

にかろうじてった。

barely は「達成はした」というみがやすい。 Barely leans toward having just managed it.

She hardly ever checks her email.

はめったにメールをない。

hardly ever で「めったに〜ない」。さをす。 Hardly ever marks very low frequency: almost never.

hard()= 熱心に・しく

わらないままになる。 The adverb keeps the same form as the adjective, and the meaning is positive.

It was raining hard when we left.

るとき、しくっていた。

hardly = ほとんど〜ない

hard からしたがり、いまは hard のとつながらない。 It grew out of hard but drifted, and the two no longer share a meaning.

It was hardly raining when we left.

るとき、はほとんどっていなかった。

よくある Common Mistake

He works hardly, so he deserves the promotion.

一生いているので、にふさわしい。(のつもりで)

He works hard, so he deserves the promotion.

一生いているので、にふさわしい。

-ly をければになる、というです。hard はそのままのとしてきます。hardly はこそ hard ですがっており、「ほとんど〜ない」をします。だから He works hardly. は「はほとんどかない」。めたつもりがになってしまいます。しかも hardly は(があればその)がなので、works hardly というきません。に late(く)と lately()があり、こちらもがつながりません。

The instinct that -ly makes an adverb backfires here. Hard already works as an adverb in its bare form. Hardly is an unrelated word meaning almost not at all, so "he works hardly" says he barely works, turning praise into its opposite. The pair late and lately behaves the same way: lately means recently and has nothing to do with being late.

  • hardly ever めったに〜ない hardly に ever をしてさをす。never よりしゆるい。 Hardly plus ever marks very low frequency, a shade softer than never.
  • hardly any ほとんど〜ない() がゼロにいことをす。no ほどしない。 Says the amount is close to zero without the flat claim that no makes.
  • barely enough かろうじてりる barely の「達成り」のみがよく Shows barely at its most positive: it did just reach the line.
  • no sooner ... than ... 〜するやいなや Hardly ... when ... と。than を使 The sibling pattern to hardly … when …, but note that it takes than.
