in は「中にいる」(位置)、into は「中へ入っていく」(動き)。違いは矢印があるかないか、です。The keys are in my bag.(位置)/ He walked into the room.(動き)。
In marks position: being inside. Into marks motion: heading inside. The whole difference is the arrow. The keys are in my bag (position); he walked into the room (motion).

in の絵は静止画です。もう中にある。into の絵は動画で、外から中へ矢印が伸びています。動きの動詞(walk・jump・run・get)と組むときは into が基本。ただし口語では、get in the car / jump in the pool のような短い決まり文句で、in が動きに使われることもよくあります。
In is a still photo: already inside. Into is a clip with an arrow crossing the boundary. With motion verbs — walk, jump, run, get — into is the default. That said, casual English happily uses in for motion in short set phrases: get in the car, jump in the pool.

よくある間違い / Common Mistake
×The keys are into my bag.
鍵はカバンの中にある。(のつもりで)
○The keys are in my bag.
鍵はカバンの中にある。
位置を言うとき、are のような「ある・いる」の動詞に into は組めません。into は必ず動き(または変化)とセット。位置だけなら in です(be into jazz「ハマってる」は別枠の慣用)。
For location, a being-verb like are has no motion for into to ride on — pure position takes in. Into always needs movement or change. (The idiom be into jazz is a separate creature.)
get into trouble面倒なことになるトラブルという領域の中へ入り込む絵。Wandering inside the territory called trouble.
run into ...〜にばったり会う進路が交差して、相手の空間に入り込む偶然。Your path crosses into someone's space — by accident.
turn into ...〜に変わる別の状態の中へ。変身の into。Stepping inside another state — the into of transformation.
be into ...〜にハマっている気持ちが対象の世界の中に住み着いている口語表現。Your enthusiasm has moved in and unpacked — casual but everywhere.
まとめ / Summary

be 動詞と into は組めない。位置は in。Being-verbs can't take into — position is in.
