boring と bored(-ing と -ed の形容詞)Boring or Bored? The -ing/-ed Split
Participles
The movie was boring.(映画が退屈さを発生させた)→ I was bored.(私はそれを浴びて退屈した)。I'm boring.
The -ing form is the source of the feeling; the -ed form is the receiver. The movie was boring (it generated the boredom) → I was bored (I soaked in it). Say I'm boring and you've introduced yourself as a person who puts others to sleep — an accident worth retiring today.
Draw the emotion's arrow: the movie → (boredom rays) → me. The emitter is boring; the soaked party is bored. Exciting news / excited fans, surprising results / surprised faces — the same arrow every time. The shortcut "things take -ing, people take -ed" mostly works, but people can be emitters too (He's amazing), so the real test is: emitting, or receiving?
Both ends of the arrow
lecture was so boring that I almost fell asleep.
The lecture emits.
I'm really excitedabout形容詞が決める【excited about = 〜が楽しみ】excited about が定型。 trip!
私=わくわくの受け手。I receive the excitement.
It's confusing at first, but you'll get usedtoto のあとが -ing になる【get used to + -ing/名詞 = 〜に慣れる】この to も前置詞なので、後ろは名詞か -ing。get used to it ○ / get used to waking up early ○ / get used to wake up ✗。 it.
The system emits the confusion.
-ing(出す側)
Has the power to cause the feeling.
That's an interesting idea.
-ed(受ける側)

Common Mistake
×Sorry, I was so boring during the meeting.
○Sorry, I was so bored during the meeting.
I was boring confesses that you were the dull one — and since the sentence is perfectly grammatical, nobody will correct you. If you soaked in the boredom, you were bored. A half-second emit-or-receive check before every emotion adjective is cheap insurance.
Sounds exciting! Their story emits — the classic -ing reaction.
I'm exhausted. Fully soaked in fatigue — tired, amplified.
That's frustrating. Sympathy for a situation that emits frustration.
The explanation is confusing; the listener is confused — perfect arrow practice.
