happen はにできない() Why "Was Happened" Doesn't Exist

The Passive

happen(こる)・appear(れる)・arrive(く)・die(ぬ)はにできません(× was happened)。: は「させる」なので、たないにはさせるがないんです。は「そのるか?」——一角を、ここでします。

Happen, appear, arrive, and die build no passive — "was happened" doesn't exist. The logic is simple: the passive works by promoting an object to subject, and intransitive verbs have no object to promote. No object, no passive. Let's seal off this accident-prone corner for good.

させるがない

Nothing to Promote

してください: Someone stole my bike. の my bike をさせて My bike was stolen.。ところが The accident happened. にはがそもそもありません。ゼロ——だから()もれない。で appear・disappear・arrive・exist・occur も。「このろにある?」の一問が、です。

Recall the passive assembly line: take the object of Someone stole my bike and promote it — My bike was stolen. But The accident happened has no object on the line at all. No raw material, no product. The same shortage rules out appear, disappear, arrive, exist, and occur. The checkpoint question: does this verb carry an object?

きた=かのせいでこされた」という発想から was happened がまれますが、happen はらないのでりません。に × was died(→ died)、× was appeared(→ appeared)。「そのろにれるか?」——れなければのままです。

The thought "the accident was made to happen" births was happened — but happen carries no object, so the assembly line rejects it. Same family of crashes: "was died" (→ died), "was appeared" (→ appeared). The test: does the verb take an object? If not, stay active.

  • What happened? どうしたの?/があった? happen の実戦がこののままれる。 Happen's flagship phrase — active, always.
  • it just so happens (that) ... たまたま〜なんだ 一致。It just so happens I know him.(いでね) Serving up a coincidence: It just so happens I know him.
  • appear out of nowhere どこからともなくれる appear のにせず、こののまま。 Appear's classic company — active, as it must be.
  • pass away くなる die の。これものまま使う。 The gentle die — intransitive all the same.
