just / already / yet / still と Just, Already, Yet, Still

Tense & Aspect

just は「ついさっき」、already は「よりくもう」、yet は「まだ」。「もう/まだ」の使う yet は、られるしてください。で「もうわった」とうなら already です。まっていて、just と already は have とのあいだ、yet はきます。

Just means a moment ago, already means sooner than expected, and yet means so far. The one to watch is yet: in this sense it belongs to negatives and questions only, and for a positive "I've finished," the word is already. Position is fixed too: just and already sit between have and the participle, while yet goes at the end.

Where Each One Points From Now

この4はどれも「」をにして一点します。just はのすぐ、already はしていたより、yet はまでのところ、still はいている。だからむことがくなります。が「ってる」だからです。このうのは、そのんだときのです。already・yet・still の3が「もう/まだ」をどうするかというは、「already・yet・still(もう/まだ)」のにまとめてあります。

All four take now as their reference point and gesture at a moment or a stretch around it. Just points just behind now, already points earlier than you'd expected, yet covers everything up to now, and still says something is running through now. That's why they pair so often with the present perfect, which is itself the form for standing at now and looking back. This entry is about that pairing: where the adverbs sit and which tense they pull. The vocabulary side — how already, yet, and still divide up もう and まだ — lives in the entry on already, yet, and still.

よくある Common Mistake

I have finished my homework yet.

宿はもうわりました。(のつもりで)

I have already finished my homework.

宿はもうわりました。

yet を使ったです。「もう」のの yet はで、にはりません。で「もう」といたいなら already。に「まだわっていない」なら I haven't finished my homework yet. と、きます。日本語の「もう」が already と yet のするためざりやすいところですが、かでべます。

This puts yet in a positive statement, where this sense of it doesn't belong. "Already" is the word for the positive, and for the negative you write "I haven't finished my homework yet," with yet at the end. Japanese covers both with もう, which is why they get crossed, but the choice is mechanical: look at whether the sentence is positive or negative.

  • just now たった く。このむのが Sits at the end, and this version normally takes the simple past.
  • not ... yet まだ〜していない で、らない。 The standard negative. Neutral, with no feeling attached.
