代名詞 Pronouns
it は「その物自体」、one は「同じ種類の別の1つ」。ペンをなくして新しく買うなら buy one(どれでもいい同種の1本)、なくしたその1本を見つけたなら found it。実は a と the の関係がそのまま代名詞になった対です。
It means that very thing; one means another of the same kind. Lose your pen and buy a replacement — buy one (any pen of that kind). Find the lost pen itself — found it. This pair is simply a and the, reborn as pronouns.

冠詞の章の理屈がここで再登場します。a pen(どれでもいい1本)を受けるのが one、the pen(特定のあの1本)を受けるのが it。だから「新しく1つ欲しい」は one、「例のあれをどうこうする」は it。冠詞の使い分けができる人は、実はもう one と it の使い分けもできているんです。
The logic from the articles chapter returns. One picks up a pen — any one of the kind; it picks up the pen — that specific one. So wanting a replacement is one territory, and doing something with the known object is it territory. If you can handle a and the, you already know how to handle one and it.

形容詞を付けて選ぶときも one(the blue one)。複数は ones。 One takes adjectives for choosing — the blue one; plural ones.

よくある間違い Common Mistake
My phone broke, so I bought it yesterday.
スマホが壊れたから、昨日(新しいのを)買った。(のつもりで)
My phone broke, so I bought a new one yesterday.
スマホが壊れたから、昨日新しいのを買った。
it にすると「壊れたその同じスマホを買った」という妙な話になります。買ったのは同種の別の1台なので one(a new one)。「その物自体か、同種の別か」を一瞬確認する癖をつけてください。
