Participle Clauses: The Compressed Sentence

Participles

Walking down the street, I ran into an old friend.(りをいていて、にばったりった)。は「+」をんで圧縮する、言葉です。鉄則はひとつ: =。ここがれるとになります()。

Walking down the street, I ran into an old friend. A participle clause folds away the conjunction and subject to compress a sentence — mainly a written-English tool. One iron rule: the participle's understood subject must equal the main clause's subject. Break it and you get the dangling participle (see the related entry for the crime scene).

Folding the Conjunction Away

While I was walking down the street, I ran into ... の While I was をむと Walking down the street, I ran into ...。(〜しながら)・(〜なので)・(〜して)——います。への一歩は having done(Having finished the report, she went home. =レポートをえてからった)。んだだけまる、言葉圧縮です。

Fold the While I was out of While I was walking down the street, I ran into … and you get the participle clause. Time (while), reason (because), attendant circumstance (and) — context restores the missing conjunction. One step into the past is having done: Having finished the report, she went home. Every fold tightens the sentence: written English's compression craft.
