I was given a present(もらう) I Was Given a Present: Receivers as Subjects

The Passive

I was given a present.(プレゼントをもらった)。 A present was given to me.

Verbs that take two objects — give, tell, send: person + thing — build two passives. Person as subject: I was given a present. Thing as subject: A present was given to me. In practice, the person-version dominates: it's the natural English for "I was given, told, shown."

The Receiver Can Take the Wheel

They gave me a present. にはが2つあります(me と a present)。 I was told to wait here.(ここでつようわれた——にかは)。します。

They gave me a present holds two objects: me and a present. Either can be promoted to subject, but English likes people in the driver's seat, so I was given … is the go-to. The frame's superpower: reporting what you received without naming the giver — I was told to wait here (by whom, unsaid). Instructions, messages, and handouts all ride this pattern.

Given, told, shown

Common Mistake

My coworkers gave me a birthday present.

(I was given ...)

Grammatically fine — but when you know who gave it, everyday reporting wants the active voice. The thing-subject passive with by reads like a ceremony ledger. The receiver-subject version earns its keep when the giver can go unnamed. That's the axis.
