"I like A better than B" compresses into prefer A to B — with to, not than: I prefer tea to coffee. It's a special rule imported with the Latin verb, shared by superior to and junior to. 「比較といえば than」の引力で起きる定番ミスです。prefer の相棒は to。どうしても than を使いたければ、動詞ごと乗り換えて I like tea better than coffee. と言えば万事解決です。ひとつだけ例外があって、不定詞で並べるときは to の席がふさがっているので rather than を使います: I prefer to walk rather than drive.(車を使うより歩くほうがいい)。名詞・動名詞なら to、不定詞なら rather than、と覚えてください。
The gravitational pull of "comparison = than" causes this classic slip. Prefer's partner is to. If your mouth insists on than, switch vehicles entirely: I like tea better than coffee solves everything. One exception: line up two infinitives and the to slot is already taken, so the comparison runs on rather than — I prefer to walk rather than drive. Nouns and gerunds take to; infinitives take rather than.
