の to(〜するために) The Purpose To: In Order to Get Things Done

Infinitives & Gerunds

I went out to buy milk.(いにた)。まった言葉では in order to。すべきは for との使けで、は to、モノのは for -ing です(a knife for cutting bread =パンのナイフ)。

To say why you did something, plain to do is the default: I went out to buy milk. Formal writing offers in order to. The trap is for: actions take purpose-to, while objects take for -ing (a knife for cutting bread). That split is where Japanese learners crash most.

は to、モノのは for

Purposes Take To; Uses Take For

Why did you call? — To ask about tomorrow.(明日くために)。一方「このか」は for -ing: What's this button for? — It's for adjusting the volume.(調)。

Why someone acted gets answered with to do: "Why did you call?" "To ask about tomorrow." What a tool is for gets for -ing: "What's this button for?" "It's for adjusting the volume." Human actions take the arrow to; object functions take the use-label for. Check whether the subject is a person or a thing, and the choice mostly makes itself.

は to do。「〜するために」のえとして for -ing が使えるのは、モノやうとき(a room for studying =部屋)。なお Thank you for coming のような「の for」はです(+ -ing の)。

The translation gravity of ために = for causes this top-frequency crash. A person's purpose takes to do; as a purpose phrase, for -ing works only when labeling an object's or place's use (a room for studying). The reason-for of Thank you for coming is a different job — see the preposition entry.
