stop to do と stop doing Stop to Do vs. Stop Doing

Infinitives & Gerunds

He stopped smoking. =タバコをやめた。He stopped to smoke. =タバコをうためにまった。になるペアです。かし: to smoke は stop のではなく「(〜するために)」。実体が、いちばんです。

He stopped smoking: he quit. He stopped to smoke: he paused in order to have one. The most famous meaning-flip in the book. The trick revealed: to smoke isn't stop's object at all — it's a purpose phrase ("in order to"). This is where the arrow-vs-thing logic performs its most dramatic work.

to はではなく「

The To Isn't an Object — It's a Purpose

stop doing の doing は、stop がやめる(実体)です。一方 stop to do の to do は、「まった」をえるの to(purpose-to の)。つまり stop to smoke は「(くのを・を)めた+うために」という2。stop が to をっているわけではない——ここがければ、このペアはざりません。

In stop doing, the doing is what gets stopped: the thing. In stop to do, the to do hangs on as a reason for stopping — the purpose to (see its own entry). So stop to smoke means "halted (walking, working) + in order to smoke": a two-part structure. Stop never takes the to-phrase as its object. See through that, and the pair never blurs again.
