pretty good の pretty は「かわいい」ではなく「かなり」——口語の超頻出副詞です。quite は要注意の米英差: アメリカでは「かなり」、イギリスでは(gradable な形容詞に付くと)「まあまあ」に目減りします。rather は主に英で「なかなか・けっこう」(良い形容詞となら「思ったよりなかなか」の好意的な驚き、悪い形容詞となら残念寄り)。ほめ言葉の解釈が国で変わる、地雷原ペアです。
The pretty in pretty good means "fairly," not "cute"; it's one of casual English's busiest adverbs. Quite is the transatlantic trap: American quite means "very much so," while British quite, on gradable adjectives, shrinks to "moderately." Rather, mainly British, means "fairly" — pleasantly surprised with good adjectives, regretful with bad ones. A compliment can change size mid-Atlantic.

pretty が「かなり」になるのは、後ろに形容詞・副詞が続くときだけです。単独で文末に立つと「(見た目が)きれい」という形容詞に戻ります。The view was pretty. も文としては成立しますが、「かなり良い」ではなく「きれいだった」の意味。強めたいなら pretty +形容詞の形を守ってください。
Pretty means "fairly" only while it stands before an adjective or adverb. Alone at the end of the sentence, it reverts to the adjective "attractive." The view was pretty is a fine sentence — but it says the view was lovely, not "fairly [something]." To intensify, keep the pretty + adjective shape.
pretty muchほぼ・だいたいpretty(かなり)× much(その程度)=「ほぼ全部」。口語の万能選手。Fairly × that-much = almost entirely. Casual English's utility player.
not bad悪くない(=けっこう良い)控えめ表現の入口。英では高評価のことも多い。Understatement's front door — often high praise in Britain.
