the + 形容詞で「〜な人々」 The Rich, the Poor, the Young
冠詞 Articles
the rich は「その金持ち(1人)」ではなく「金持ちという人々全体」。the + 形容詞で「〜な人々」という集団を表せます。ニュース・書き言葉でよく使う型です。
The rich doesn't mean one rich person you know — it means rich people as a group. The + adjective names a whole class of people. You'll meet it constantly in news and formal writing.
名詞が省略されている、のではない
Nothing Is Missing
the rich (people) の people が省略された形、と説明されることもあります。でも覚え方としては「the + 形容詞=その性質の人々全員」というひとつの型として持っておくほうが実戦的です。集団なので文法上は複数扱い。動詞は are。この型では1人を指すことはできません(法律語の the accused「被告人」のような単数の専門用法は別枠です)。
You'll sometimes hear that the rich is short for the rich people. As a memory hook, it's more practical to treat the + adjective as its own pattern: everyone with that quality. It's grammatically plural — the rich are — and in this pattern it never points to one individual (legal terms like the accused, which takes the singular, are a separate specialty).
ニュースの定番 News-writing staples
The rich are getting richer.
金持ちはますます豊かになっている。
複数扱い。動詞は are。 Plural: the rich are, never is.
The elderly need better care.
高齢者には、よりよいケアが必要だ。
論説・ニュースの定番の型。 A staple of editorials and news.
There's a parking space for the disabled.
障害のある人のための駐車スペースがある。
公共表示で頻出。近年は people with disabilities という言い方も増えている。 Common on signs — though people with disabilities is increasingly preferred in careful writing.
the rich
金持ちという集団ぜんぶ。 Rich people as a class.
The rich pay more tax here.
ここでは富裕層ほど多く税を払う。
a rich man / rich people
1人なら a rich man。集団全体でない複数なら rich people。 One person: a rich man. Some of them, not the whole class: rich people.
A rich man bought the building.
ある金持ちがそのビルを買った。
よくある間違い Common Mistake
The poor is always with us.
貧しい人々は、いつの時代もいる。(のつもりで)
The poor are always with us.
貧しい人々は、いつの時代もいる。
the + 形容詞は集団=複数扱いです。単数で受けてしまうのが、この型でいちばん多い間違い。
The + adjective is a group, so it's plural. Treating it as singular is the classic slip with this pattern.
