unless は「〜という場合を除いて」。例外をひとつ差し出す語です。多くの場面で if … not と入れ替えられますが、いつもではありません。感情や反応を述べる文には入りにくく、そこは if … not の担当になります。そして unless の中は肯定形。unless you don't study と書くと否定が二重になります。
Unless means except if. It puts forward one exception. In many sentences it swaps cleanly with if … not, but not in all of them: it sits poorly in front of a reaction, where if … not takes over. One more thing: the clause after unless stays positive. Write "unless you don't study" and you've stacked two negatives.

unless の中身は「これさえ起きれば結果が変わる」という条件です。You'll fail unless you study.(勉強するという例外を除けば落ちる)。ここが if … not との差になります。if … not はただの否定条件ですが、unless は「唯一の抜け道」を指し示すので、結果がすでに決まっている場面に向いています。
What sits inside unless is the one thing that would change the outcome. "You'll fail unless you study" points at studying as the single way out. That's the edge it has over if … not, which is just a negative condition. Unless names an escape route, so it fits best when the result is otherwise settled.

否定の条件を並べるだけ。感情や反応を述べる文にも、事実に反する仮定にも使えるので守備範囲が広い。Just a negative condition. It also works in front of a reaction and inside contrary-to-fact suppositions, so its range is wider.

よくある間違い / Common Mistake

unless の中にはすでに「〜でなければ」の否定が入っています。そこに don't を足すと否定が二重になり、「勉強しなければ落ちる」ではなく「勉強すれば落ちる」に近い意味になってしまいます。日本語の「〜しない限り」に引きずられて not を足したくなる型なので、unless = if … not と覚えて、not は1つだけと確認してください。
Unless already carries the negative. Adding don't stacks a second one, and the sentence flips toward saying that studying is what makes you fail. The pull to insert not is strong because many languages mark the negative twice here. Hold on to unless = if … not and check that only one negative survives.
unless otherwise stated特に断りのない限り書面の定型。契約書・仕様書・注記でよく見る。A written formula. Common in contracts, specifications, and footnotes.
Not unless ...〜でもしない限り、しない会話の受け答えで使う強い条件付き拒否。Are you coming? — Not unless you drive.A firm conditional refusal in conversation: "Are you coming?" "Not unless you drive."
as long as ...〜でありさえすれば条件を肯定で出す型。unless の裏返しにあたる。States the condition positively, the mirror image of unless.
provided (that) ...〜という条件でas long as の硬い版。契約や規程で使う。A formal as long as, at home in contracts and regulations.
