will は「今この場で決めた・そう思う」、be going to は「前から決めてある・兆候が見えている」。どちらも未来ですが、決めたタイミングと根拠が違います。
Both point at the future, but they carry different backstories: will means you're deciding or predicting on the spot; be going to means the plan was already made — or the evidence is already visible.

電話が鳴った瞬間の I'll get it!(私が出る!)は、今この場の決断だから will。今週末の帰省を語る I'm going to visit my parents. は、決めたのが過去だから be going to。未来の話をしているようで、実は「決断がいつだったか」を伝えているんです。
The phone rings and you say I'll get it! — decided this second, so will. Telling a friend I'm going to visit my parents this weekend reports a decision made days ago, so be going to. You seem to be talking about the future, but you're really reporting when the decision happened.

よくある間違い / Common Mistake
×I will meet Tom tomorrow. We booked a table.
明日トムと会うんだ。席も予約した。(決まっている予定の話で)

明日トムと会うんだ。席も予約した。
決めてある予定を will で言うと「今思いついた」ように響き、後ろの「予約済み」と食い違います。予定の報告は be going to(または現在進行形)。なお、単なる予測(It will rain tomorrow.)なら will も普通です。
Announcing a made plan with will sounds like you just thought of it, which clashes with the booked table. Report plans with be going to (or the present continuous). For plain predictions — It will rain tomorrow — will is perfectly normal.
I'll take it.これください。買い物の決断はその場で生まれる。だから will。A purchase decision is born on the spot — will.
I'll be right back.すぐ戻るね。今この瞬間に生まれた軽い約束。A promise minted this second.
What are you going to do?どうするつもり?相手の中に(すでに)あるはずの計画を聞いている。You're asking about a plan assumed to exist already.
It's going to be okay.きっと大丈夫。今ある状況の流れから見える結末。励ましの定番。The outcome you can see coming from where things stand — the classic reassurance.
