between は「2つのあいだ」だと習いますが、正確には「一つひとつを個別に見ているとき」です。a treaty between the five nations は5か国でも between。それぞれが相手として立っているからです。among は個々を区別せず、集まりの中に埋もれさせる語。among the trees の木は数えていません。
Between is usually taught as being for two things, but the real condition is that you're seeing each one separately. "A treaty between the five nations" is correct with five, because each nation stands as a party to the others. Among makes no such distinctions and lets things blur into a mass: nobody is counting the trees in "among the trees."
数ではなく、見え方で決まる

「between は2つ、among は3つ以上」という覚え方は、多くの場面で当たりますが理由が違います。決めているのは数ではなく、個々を区別して見ているかどうか。2つなら必ず区別できるので between になる、という順番です。3つ以上でも、一つひとつが相手として立っているなら between を使います。
The rule of thumb — between for two, among for three or more — gets the right answer most of the time but for the wrong reason. What decides it is whether you're seeing the items individually, not how many there are. With two you always can, which is why two always takes between. With three or more, between is still right whenever each one stands as a separate party.

個々を区別しない。ひとかたまりの中に位置づける。No individual distinctions. It places something inside a mass.

よくある間違い / Common Mistake
×This stays just between you and I.
これは私たちだけの話にしておいて。(のつもりで)

前置詞の後ろは目的格なので、I ではなく me です。between you and me が正しい形。この誤りは、丁寧に言おうとするほど起きます。「you and I が正しい」と学んだ記憶が、前置詞の後ろにまで及んでしまうからです。判定は簡単で、you を外してみること。between me なら自然、between I とは言えません。同じ過剰修正は目的格の whom を主語の位置に入れる誤りにも見られ、どちらも「正しく話そう」という意識が裏目に出た形です。
A preposition takes the object form, so it's me, not I: between you and me. This slip shows up most when someone is trying to sound careful, because the lesson that "you and I" is correct gets carried into a slot where it doesn't apply. The test is to drop the you: between me is fine, between I is not. The same overcorrection produces whom in subject position, and both come from the effort to speak properly backfiring.

among other thingsとりわけ／いくつかあるうちのひとつとして他にもあると示しつつ一つを挙げる型。書き言葉で頻出。Names one item while signalling there were others. Common in writing.
in betweenその中間で2つの選択肢のどちらでもない位置。副詞としても使う。Neither of two options. It also works as an adverb on its own.
caught between ...板挟みになって両側から引かれている絵。対立する2者を個別に見ている。Pulled from both sides, with the two forces seen separately.
まとめ / Summary
