(Will you be -ing? のさ) Will You Be Coming?

Tense & Aspect

This time tomorrow I'll be flying to Osaka.(明日ごろはかうです)。 Will you be coming to the meeting? Will you come …?

Will be -ing marks something as under way at a future moment: "This time tomorrow I'll be flying to Osaka." It has a second, very practical use as well. "Will you be coming to the meeting?" asks whether you're coming without asking you to commit, and it lands softer than "Will you come …?"

Asking How Things Will Fall, Not What You'll Choose

Will you come? Will you be coming?

"Will you come?" asks about your intention, which is why it reads as a request or an invitation and can be awkward to decline. "Will you be coming?" asks whether that's how things are shaping up, and it doesn't put a decision on you. When all you want is to confirm a plan, the second lands more comfortably. The politeness comes from asking about the situation rather than the will.

Will you attend …?

This asks about intention when the goal was just to learn the plan. "Will you attend …?" reads as a request to attend, which makes it awkward to decline. When you only need the information, use will be -ing: it asks about the situation, so either answer is comfortable. For headcounts, seating, and similar fact-gathering, this is the standard form.

  • This time tomorrow ... Names a future moment, and it pairs naturally with this form.
  • Will you be -ing? Checks a plan without asking for a decision. Standard for headcounts.
