off の(接触かられる) Off: Breaking Contact

Prepositions

off は on ので、くっついていたものがれるです。take off your coat はからすこと、get off the bus はバスのからすこと。このから、れる turn off、れる off duty、からられる 20% off までがつきます。

Off is the opposite of on: something that was in contact comes away. "Take off your coat" separates the coat from your body; "get off the bus" lifts your feet from its floor. From that one picture come turn off, where the circuit breaks, off duty, where you've stepped away from work, and 20% off, where the amount comes away from the price.

It Was Attached, and Now It Isn't

on が接触すので、off はその接触れることをします。からまって、つながりがれるあらゆるがりました。のシフト、。どれも「くっついていたものがれる」とめます。えるでも、をたどればります。

On means contact, so off means that contact breaking. It starts with physical separation and spreads to any connection being cut: an electrical circuit, a work shift, an arrangement, a price. Each one reads as something coming away from what it was attached to. Even the abstract uses hold together once you trace them back to the picture.

This uses off for a taxi. Off pictures breaking contact with a surface, so it suits vehicles you stand on the floor of: buses, trains, planes, bicycles. A taxi or a private car encloses you, so it takes out of. The test is quick: if you ride on top of it or astride it, use off; if it closes around you, use out of. Bicycles and horses take off for the same reason — your body stays on the outside. Boats take either, depending on size. It's worth building the habit of choosing per vehicle rather than reaching for one all-purpose verb.
