(出来事) The Event and the Backdrop

Tense & Aspect

はそこへきた出来事です。I was cooking when the phone rang.(をしていたらった)。ここでを2つべて I cooked when the phone rang. とすると、「ってからした」というわってしまいます。

The past continuous lays down a backdrop; the simple past drops an event onto it. "I was cooking when the phone rang." Put two simple pasts side by side instead, as in "I cooked when the phone rang," and the sentence flips into a sequence, with the cooking starting after the call.

A Line, and a Point That Lands on It

は、そのすでにいていたことをとしてきます。はそのさるです。だから物語では、まずき、そこへ出来事とす、というてになります。えると、してしまいます。

The past continuous draws a line: something already under way at that moment. The simple past is a point landing on that line. Storytelling runs on the combination, laying down the scene in the continuous and then dropping the event in with a simple past. Swap the line and the point and your reader reassembles the sequence in the wrong order.

さる A point landing on a line

Two simple pasts side by side are read in the order they appear, so this says the phone rang and then the cooking started, which is backwards. Putting the interrupted activity in the continuous marks it as a line already running. The test is which one started first: put that one in the continuous and the sequence can't be misread.
