(toける) Reporting Orders and Requests

Reported Speech

"Close the door." He told me to close the door. なら not を to のいて not to touch it。

"Close the door" is reported as: He told me to close the door. Orders and requests come across in a to-infinitive rather than a that-clause. For a negative, not goes in front of to, giving not to touch it. The verb you choose sets the force: tell for an instruction, ask for a request, order for a command, advise for a recommendation.

An imperative has no stated subject. Reporting one means bringing that missing person into view, which is why the pattern comes out as tell someone to do, with both the person and the action laid out. The you that was implicit in "Close the door" surfaces as me once the sentence is reported.

He said that I should wait outside.

Say has been used to report a command. It can't take a person directly, and it doesn't accept this to-infinitive pattern either. Reporting an order or a request calls for tell, ask, order, advise, warn, remind, and their kin. If say is unavoidable, you can route the content through a that-clause — "He said that I should wait outside" — but that's the long way round. Reach for told.

  • tell someone to ... The basic frame for reporting an instruction. The person is required.
  • ask someone to ... Reports a request, leaving room for the answer to be no.
  • warn someone not to ... The warning frame, most often paired with a negative.
  • remind someone to ... Assumes they already know and nudges the memory. That's what separates it from tell.
