(わる) Choosing the Reporting Verb

Reported Speech

say と tell はですが、までびます。claim を使えば「はそうっているが」というますし、admit ならなことをめたみになります。ぶことは、だけでなくぶことでもあります。そしてごとににもります。

Say and tell are neutral; most other reporting verbs carry an attitude as well. Claim puts distance between you and the statement, hinting that it's their account. Admit implies the speaker conceded something that costs them. Choosing the verb is choosing a stance, not just relaying content. Each verb also has its own grammatical pattern to watch.

Same Words, Different Colour

He said the figures were correct. と He claimed the figures were correct. は、しているじでもいます。は「かどうかはとして」というみます。でこのされるのはそのためです。くときは、がどこにっているかをしていることになります。

"He said the figures were correct" and "He claimed the figures were correct" relay identical content but leave different impressions. The first is neutral; the second holds the statement at arm's length, implying that whether it's true is another matter. Journalism watches this distinction closely for exactly that reason. When you write, the verb is quietly announcing where you stand.

Attitude rides along

よくある Common Mistake

He suggested me to take the earlier train.

るようめてくれた。(のつもりで)

He suggested that I take the earlier train.

るようめてくれた。

suggest に「 + to」の使ったです。このは thatしかりません。He suggested taking the earlier train. でもいません。に recommend / propose / insist があり、いずれもいてから toけるいます(ただし recommend だけは、イギリスで I recommend you to see a doctor. のような使われます。アメリカではけられるので、thatにしておくのがです)。なお insist には「そうだとる」と「そうしろとする」の2つのがあり、のほうでは thatになります(He insisted that the invoice be sent.)。イギリスでは should をれた that the invoice should be sent もです。一方 tell / ask / advise / warn は + toります。だけでなくもセットでえると、このりがります。

This gives suggest a person plus an infinitive, a pattern it doesn't accept. The verb takes a that-clause or an -ing form only, so "He suggested taking the earlier train" works as well. Recommend, propose, and insist belong to the same group and refuse the same shape. (Recommend is the partial exception: British English does use "I recommend you to see a doctor," while American English avoids it, so a that-clause is the safe route either way.) Insist carries two senses, incidentally: asserting that something is so, and demanding that something be done, and the demanding sense puts the that-clause verb in its base form, as in "He insisted that the invoice be sent." British English is equally happy with should in that slot: that the invoice should be sent. Tell, ask, advise, and warn, meanwhile, accept the person-plus-infinitive shape happily. Learning each reporting verb together with its pattern, not just its meaning, heads off this whole class of error.

  • point out that ... 〜だとする りのめずにできる。 A fairly neutral verb for flagging a fact, correcting without blaming.
  • admit -ing 〜したことをめる 。admit doing と admit that の Takes an -ing form, though admit that is available too.
  • deny -ing 〜したことをする admit の。toらないので deny to do とはわない。 The counterpart to admit. It never takes an infinitive.
  • go on to say that ... けて〜とべる べるときのつなぎ。使う。 Chains one remark to the next, common in reporting and minutes.
